Third-seeded Owls face sixth-seeded Hawks in opening round

Game Notes

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. –
The six-team field has been set for the 2012 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship, to be held at Saint Louis University in Saint Louis, Mo., May 9-12. Top-seeded Massachusetts, which went a perfect 19-0 in conference play, will be joined by No. 2 Fordham, No. 3 Temple, No. 4 George Washington, No. 5 Charlotte and No. 6 Saint Joseph's in the hunt for the A-10 crown.

All 11 games of the double-elimination tournament will be played at Saint Louis University's Billiken Sports Center with the championship set for Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 pm CT.

The Minutewomen concluded the regular season with the perfect conference mark and a 35-11 overall record. UMass will receive a first-round bye. The other first-round bye was claimed by second-seeded Fordham. The Rams, the defending A-10 champion, finished the regular season at 14-6 in A-10 play and are currently 31-24 overall.

Third-seeded Temple finished the regular season at 12-6 in A-10 play and 27-20 overall. It is the second-straight playoff appearance for the Owls after not making the event since 2007. The Cherry and White will face sixth-seeded Saint Joseph's Wednesday at 3:30 pm CT.

Temple has faced every team in this year's tournament, going 5-4 against the field. TU swept opening round opponent Saint Joseph's just two weeks ago, winning 3-1 and 7-3. The Owls lost their only game with UMass (L, 0-9), split with Fordham (L, 0-5; W, 6-5), were swept by George Washington (L, 2-4; L, 7-11), and swept Charlotte in the first A-10 games of the season (W, 9-7; W, 10-5).

TU comes into the tournament having won 10 of its final 13 games of the regular season. The win total is one that only seven other teams in the 38-year history of TU's softball program have reached. No team has had as many wins since the 2004 team won 30 games.

Sarah Prezioso leads the squad with a .367 average, collecting 54 hits with nine doubles, three triples and four homeruns. Her 39 RBI are also tops on the team.

On the mound, Brooklin White paces the Owls with a 14-10 record with three shutouts. Her 3.38 ERA is second on the team to Capri Catalano's 3.06 mark, while Catalano has posted an 8-7 record and also has three shutouts.

SJU was 20-27-1 overall and 9-10-1 in the Atlantic 10, and claimed the sixth and final spot in the championship bracket with a win Saturday over St. Bonaventure. The Temple-SJU winner will play Fordham at 3:30 pm CT on Thursday.

George Washington finished conference play at 11-9 and will be the number four seed. The Colonials were 22-28 overall and will play fifth-seeded Charlotte at 1:00 pm CT in the first game of the championship. The 49ers were 10-10 in league play and 28-24 overall. The winner of the GW-Charlotte game advances to face UMass at 1:00 pm CT on Thursday.

Each day of the championship except Saturday features three games. Wednesday and Thursday each have an elimination game in the consolation bracket scheduled for 6:00 pm CT. Friday will feature two elimination games at 3:30 pm and 6:00 pm.

The "if necessary" championship game will be played Saturday 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first championship game. The winner of the 2012 Softball Championship will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Softball Tournament.

Admission is $8 for adults, youth (17 and under) and seniors is $4 and free for all A-10 students with an ID. Four-day passes are available for adults for $24, and youth and seniors for $12.
