2012 Volleyball Schedule
PHILADELPHIA – Second-year head coach Bakeer Ganes has announced the 2012 schedule for Temple volleyball, which is highlighted by the Owls hosting their own Temple Invitational in mid-September. The lineup for the tournament, which runs Sept. 14-15, includes Cornell, Central Connecticut and Navy.
Temple begins the season with a road trip south for the University of South Carolina Invitational on Aug. 24-25. The Owls will open with host USC on Friday, Aug. 24, and will also play East Tennessee State, UNC Asheville and Akron over the two-day tournament.
“That first tournament at South Carolina is a real highlight of our non-conference schedule,” said Ganes. “It's going to be a really good tournament and a good indicator for us at the start of the season.”
The second weekend of the season has Temple playing in the annual Big 5 Tournament at The Palestra on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. The third weekend of the season has the Owls heading to the Miami of Ohio Invitational to face Chicago State, Indiana State and host Miami.
“The Big 5 Tournament is a big deal, having it right here in Philadelphia,” said Ganes. “The competition is strong and the winner definitely gets bragging rights.”
The home opener is a single match against NJIT on Wednesday, Sept. 12, followed two days later by the Temple Invitational. The Owls will play Central Connecticut in the tournament's second match on Friday night, Sept. 14, before facing Cornell and Navy the next day.
“Our home tournament is really good with those three teams,” said Ganes. “It will allow us to finish non-conference play on a really strong note and hopefully get us ready going into the A-10 schedule. Having Butler and VCU really boosts the competition in the A-10 this season, especially because only six (of 12 teams) will make the conference tournament.
“We're very excited. Our schedule is very good and very challenging. We're looking forward to competing against some really good teams from some really good conferences.”
The Owls are set to begin conference play at home against Rhode Island on Sept. 21. Temple will play seven conference matches on the road and seven at home in 2012. The Owls will be playing both of the A-10's new additions this season, as they host VCU at home on Oct. 26 and travel to Butler on Nov. 4. Temple's first four conference matches are at home, with the following five on the road.
The Atlantic 10 Tournament will be held at Duquesne from Nov. 16-18. After missing out on a berth for the last two seasons, Temple will be looking to get back in the mix. This will mark Temple's final season in the A-10, as the Owls head to the BIG EAST Conference for the 2013 season.
