PHILADELPHIA – Seven newcomers, including four true freshmen and three transfers, will join Temple volleyball for the 2012 season. Second-year head coach Bakeer Ganes' newcomers include two student-athletes from Germany, one from China and one from Norway.

The seven newcomers are: Annemarie Boehm (Erlangen, Germany/Catholic Univ.-Ingolstadt), Alyssa Drachslin (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly), Paula Renteria (Lancaster, Pa./WV Wesleyan), Sandra Sydlik (Berlin, Germany/Flatow), Regina Trabosh (Trooper, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy), Alicia Wennberg (Stavanger, Norway/Sauda Vidaregaande) and Jingyu Zhang (Tianjin, China/Saint Petersburg College).

“We are very excited about our incoming class,” said Ganes. “I think we have a good mix of true freshmen and transfers. They will provide us depth, experience and a very high skill set. They are not just very good volleyball players but also very good students and, even more importantly, great people. We are looking forward to our preseason and getting started with our whole team.”

Boehm, a middle blocker, comes to Temple after playing two years at Catholic University of Eichstaett-Ingolstadt. She played with the Junior National Team at the German Championships in 2005 and 2006.

Drachslin is a true freshman out of Riverside, Calif., who will play defensive specialist and libero for the Owls. She was the starting libero for three years at Riverside Poly High School and helped lead her team to consecutive league titles. Drachslin was team captain and earned first team all-league honors as both a junior and senior.

After playing for two years at West Virginia Wesleyan, Renteria joins the Temple team as a junior and can play both the defensive specialist and outside hitter positions. As a sophomore at WV Wesleyan, Renteria led the team in kills and was named second team all-conference. She was a two-time first team all-state selection at Preston High School in Kingwood, W.Va., and was named a WV Gatorade Player of the Year finalist as a senior.

Sydlik, a 5-10 setter from Berlin, played for Flatow High School. She competed in the highest amateur league in Germany, and also had a standout career with the Junior National Team. She was a member of the Junior National Team that competed in the 2009 FIVB Women's Junior World Championship and earned the team title.

One of two newcomers from Pennsylvania, Trabosh is a 5-4 defensive specialist/libero from Trooper, Pa., and Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Her team went 25-7 in her final two years, and finished sixth in the state when she was a junior. Trabosh was a three-time first team all-league selection and two-time first team all-area honoree. Her recruitment to Temple marks the first time someone from her high school will play Division I volleyball.

Wennberg, a freshman outside hitter from Stavanger, Norway, started in every match at outside hitter as both a junior and senior for Sauda VGS. Her team placed second in the first division in each of her final two seasons, and she had numerous successes with the U19 National Team, the National All-Star Team and the Junior National Team.

Zhang, a 5-10 outside hitter, is somewhat of a familiar face among the newcomers, having been on the sidelines for Temple volleyball most of last season. She played the 2008 and 2009 seasons at Saint Petersburg College in Florida where she was named to the NJCAA All-American First Team.  Zhang was a standout player at both the junior and elite levels in her hometown of Tianjin, China.
