Owls, Penn and Villanova all finish at 2-1; Temple wins in a tiebreaker
PHILADELPHIA (Palestra) - The Temple volleyball team is the winner of the 2012 Big 5 Tournament after going 2-1 and taking the tiebreaker over Villanova and Penn. The Owls won eight total sets over three matches, while Penn won seven and Villanova won six, giving Temple the title. Chelsea Tupuola has been named the Big 5 Tournament MVP, while teammate Tiffany Connatser was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
"This is incredible," said Temple head coach Bakeer Ganes. "This is really great for the girls because they worked so hard this weekend. Nothing was given to us and we really had to work for every point. I'm so glad it paid off and they were rewarded, not just with the wins but to say we won the Big 5 is really great.
"It's really exciting to have Chelsea named MVP. She did a great job for the team throughout this tournament over the entire weekend. A lot of times what she does gets overlooked because she's not playing offense, but she's so important to the team and I'm really happy for her. Tiffany did a really good job running our team. She doesn't have an easy job because she's still a very young setter and I'm basically asking her to run this team. She's improving every day and I'm really excited for her to get this honor."
This year marks the fourth annual Big 5 Tournament, and it is the first-ever win for Temple. At 4-3 overall, the Owls are off to their best start in a season since 2006.
