Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season at Cissie Leary Invitational

Breland advances in singles main draw

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's tennis team opened the fall season with play at the Cissie Leary Invitational on Friday, September 21. The Owls sent six players to the tournament, hosted by Penn September 21-23.

Sophomore Rebecca Breland is TU's lone survivor in the main draw, playing out of Flight B singles. Breland earned a bye in the first round and advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 victory over Kim Milla of Delaware. She will face Dartmouth's Sarah Bessen on Saturday.

Others playing in the singles main draw were Alicia Doms, Maame Ama Osei, Yana Mavrina and Jordan Batey at Flight A, and Carly Bohman at Flight B.

Doms dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Dartmouth's Katherine Yau in her opening round match. In the consolation round, Doms moved on to the quarterfinal by way of default and faces Drexel's Marcela Rosales on Saturday.

Osei and Mavrina both received bye's before falling in the Round of 32. Osei was defeated 6-3, 6-0, by Sarah O'Neil of Cornell, while Mavrina fell 6-2, 2-6, 10-7, to Columbia's Tiana Takenaga.

Batey was a 6-3, 7-5, winner over Rosales in the opening round before falling to Akron's Angelina Jogasuria, 6-2, 1-6, 10-7, in the Round of 32.

Bohman also had a bye before going down 6-2, 6-4, to Julienne Keong of Dartmouth in the Round of 32.

In doubles action, Bohman and Mavrina teamed up to defeat Ksenia Mikhaylova and Terri Thomas of St. John's 9-8(7) in the opening round. The pair fell in the second round by an 8-4 count to Laila Judeh and Ryann Young of Cornell. After receiving bye's in the first round, the duo's of Doms and Batey, and Breland and Osei, both fell in the Round of 32. Doms and Batey dropped an 8-6 decision to Columbia's Crystal Leung and Amy Li, while Breland and Osei fell Yale's Amber Li and Hanna Yu, 8-1. All three doubles teams will be active in the consolation round on Saturday.
