Six Owls beginning fall season
PHILADELPHIA – Rebecca Breland was the lone Temple women's tennis player to advance in the singles main draw at the Cissie Leary Invitational, being held at the University of Penn on September 21-23. Alicia Doms, Maame Ama Osei, Yana Mavrina, Jordan Batey and Carly Bohman played in consolation singles, while Mavrina and Breland teamed up for doubles consolation play, along with the duos of Batey and Doms, and Breland and Osei.
Breland squared off against Sarah Bessen of Dartmouth in the Round of 16 of Flight B's main draw. The sophomore fell 6-1, 6-3 to end her quest for a flight title.
Doms was a quarterfinal round winner in the consolations, defeated Drexel's Marcela Rosales 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals. The junior will face Nicole Pivonka, also of Drexel, on Sunday morning.
Osei picked up her first singles win of the season with a 6-1, 7-5, decision over Nataliva Naumova of Delaware in the consolation Round of 32. The sophomore then dropped a 6-4, 6-3 match to Dartmouth's Akiko Okuda, a player who had defeated Batey in a three-set thriller just one round earlier (7-5, 2-6, 14-12).
Mavrina and Bohman each failed to advance past the first round of consolations. Mavrina lost 6-2, 6-1, to Penn's Sol Eskenazi, while Bohman was on the losing end of a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Katya Salas of Richmond.
All three doubles pairs received a bye in the first consolation round, before being halted in the Round of 16. Bohman and Mavrina fell 8-4 to Salas and Melissa Kandinata of Richmond. Batey and Doms nearly pulled out a tiebreaker win over Ksenia Berestetska and Signe Lazdina of Akron, but ultimately fell 8-7(4). Breland and Osei were 8-5 losers to Bowdoin's Kellen Alberstone and Tiffany Cheng.
