PHILADELPHIA – Temple head coach Ryan Wheeler recently announced that four players have committed to play baseball for the Owls beginning in 2014. Joining the team during their inaugural season in the BIG EAST Conference will be Patrick Krall, Simon Mathews, Reyn Sugai and Pat Vanderslice.

“We're excited to have these young men join our program next season,” Wheeler said. “I think these gentlemen are of the highest character and they will be tremendous assets to our program.”

A left-handed pitcher from Downingtown West High School, Krall went 5-2 last year as a junior. In his time on the mound, he posted a 2.10 ERA, struck out 41 batters and issued only four walks. His consistency helped him to a spot on the All-Chesmont team and was essential in his team reaching the Chester County Carpenter Cup at Citizens Bank Park.

Mathews, a four-year varsity letter winner at Hopkins School in West Haven, Conn. went 6-1 with an ERA of 1.21 in 52 innings of work, in which he fanned away 49 batters.

Making his way from Honolulu, Hawaii, Sugai will join the Owls' program after playing third base for Fort Scott Community College. The intended Broadcast Journalism major, batted .349 and had 11 doubles, a triple and a home run as a freshman, earning him second team all-conference.

While playing at University High School, he was a member of the Division 2 State Champions during his senior season, a year in which he batted .350 with a slugging percentage of .667 and an on base percentage of .424.

Vanderslice of Lansdowne, Pa., is a right-handed pitcher from Monsignor Bonner High School.  Playing for his national travel team, the Philly Bandits, Vanderslice went 6-1 on the mound and sported an ERA of 2.21. His stat line also included 48 strikeouts and 22 walks.

Temple will get the 2013 season and its second year under Wheeler underway on Feb. 15 when it opens a weekend set of games at the USA Baseball Complex Classic
