PHILADELPHIA -
Saturday was another successful day for the No. 9 nationally-ranked Temple Women's Fencing, where the Owls, who hosted a 12-team multi-meet, finished with an impressive 5-1 record.  The day included a win over No. 10 University of Pennsylvania and a close loss to No. 7 Northwestern.

The Owls opened the day defeating Haverford College, 22-5.

The sabre squad, led by junior Andrea Haley, sophomore Emily Dodson and junior Tasia Ford dominated with a 9-0 record while the foil Squad was 8-1, led by junior Epiphany Georges and freshman Fatima Largaespada, who were both 2-0 while the epee squad was led by junior Kimberly Howell, who was 3-0.

Temple fenced No. 12 Cornell next in what was a very challenging match.

The meet was very close for the foil and sabre squads with each winning 5-4.

“Cornell was very tough and we did a good job fighting for every touch and supporting each other,” head coach Nikki Franke said.

Eventually the Owls defeated the Big Red, 19-8, due to the outstanding perfect, 9-0, performance by the epee squad where senior Jill Bratton, juniors Chantal Montrose, Howell and freshman Jessica Hall, all went undefeated.

Temple next fenced Johns Hopkins University, where they continued their winning ways with a 21-6 defeat of JHU.

The team was led by Howell and Freshman Demi Antipas, who both went 3-0 in that meet, while freshman Petra Khan was 2-0 in sabre.

The following match against No. 7 ranked Northwestern University was difficult for the Owls, where they suffered their third loss of the season. TU fought all the way to the end and kept the support and positive energy going, but fell short at the end losing, 12-15.

Against Northwestern, the Owls were led by the sabre squad, which finished 6-3, sophomore Lauren Rangel-Friedman who was undefeated at 3-0 and senior Mikayla Varadi who was 2-1.

Following their tough loss, the Owls recovered against FDU winning, 23-4, with the epee squad going a perfect 9-0 while foil was 8-1.

The FDU match included 3-0 records for Montrose, Hall, Bratton, Largaespada and freshman Olivia Wynn

Last, but not least, was a rematch with cross-town rival, No. 10 Penn.

The meet was highly anticipated by both teams.  In their previous meeting this season, Temple squeaked out a 14-13 victory, so the Owls knew this match would be a huge challenge.  This time the Owls were well prepared for the Quakers and earned an 18-9 victory over a very good Quaker squad.

The match included winning records for all three squads with outstanding 3-0, performances from Howell and sophomore Tiki Kastor.

The hard work and practice over winter break paid off for the Owls because every individual finished the day with a winning record. The sabre squad led the way going undefeated on the day, while Howell (12-2), Bratton (11-4), Montrose (10-5) and Largaespada (10-5) all had double-digit wins.  In addition, Rangel-Friedman and Kastor both finished the day with 9-2 records.

Next, the Owls will travel to Northwestern to face the No. 7 Wildcats for the second time in as many weeks, as well as No. 1 Princeton, No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 3 Ohio State.
