BLACKSBURG, Va. – Day two of the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championship, hosted by Virginia Tech at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center, featured three doubles wins and a singles victory for the Owls. Every TU player in action on Friday was victorious and advanced to Saturday play.
Three Temple doubles teams competed on Friday, getting started in the round of 64. Sophomore Sam Rundle and freshman Vineet Naran got the winning started with an 8-5 decision over Mehdi Mekaoui and Harry Walshe of Duquesne. The pair will take on Liberty's Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
Junior Kristian Marquart and sophomore Hicham Belkssir had a tougher time, but ultimately came out on top of an 8-7(5) match against Dan Elston and Edward Becker of Longwood. The duo faces Fancisco Dias and Viktor Svensson of George Washington at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
TU's final doubles pair in action was that of sophomores Santiago Canete and Nicolas Paulus. The tandem recorded an identical score to Marquart and Belkssir in defeating UMBC's Eliott Loubatie and Biyik Akinshemoyin, 8-7(5). Canete and Paulus square off against the third-seeded duo of Harrison Richmond and Justin Shane of Virginia at 9:45 a.m. Saturday morning.
Canete was the lone Cherry & White player active in singles play. He was a straight-set winner over Richmond's Dylan Trent in the opening round of the main draw, 6-2, 6-1, and will play Radford's Nick Sayer at 12 p.m. Saturday.
Marquart received a bye in the first round of the singles main draw and will begin his quest for a title with a 10 a.m. match against Delaware's Troy Beneck on Saturday morning.
