Men's Tennis Opens 2014 Spring Season at VCU 4+1 Tournament

Team captains Kristian Marquart and Hernan Vasconez lead youthful squad
PHILADELPHIA – It begins this weekend for the 2014 version of the Temple men's tennis team. Junior co-captains Kristian Marquart and Hernan Vasconez will lead the young squad, which features no seniors. TU opens the season at the VCU 4+1 Tournament, taking on James Madison (11 a.m.) and Richmond (2 p.m.) on Saturday, January 18.
The year marks the first for the American Athletic Conference, the conference the Owls moved to from the Atlantic 10 at the beginning of the 2013-14 academic year. The men's squad will be vying for the first-ever title against nationally ranked powers Memphis (21st), Louisville (48th) and USF (70th). The rest of the league consists of UCF, Connecticut and Southern Methodist.
After opening the season with five matches on the road, the Cherry and White will play at their indoor home courts, Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center, for six-straight matches. Temple hosts St. Francis (N.Y.) on February 9 and cross-city rival Drexel on February 12. The Owls take on former A-10 foe Xavier on February 15 and turn around to host Fairleigh Dickinson the next day. Stony Brook visits Philly on February 21 before TU plays its final home match for over a month with a visit from previous conference opponent Fordham on February 23.
The squad heads on the road beginning with a March 1 trip to Hampton, and will not return home until April 12. During that time, the Owls will travel to UMES, Penn, Binghamton, Lehigh, Villanova, UConn, Quinnipiac and Navy. TU wraps up the regular season with two final home matches at TU Pavilion, hosting Bucknell on April 12 and Rider on April 13.
The team then heads to the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship, hosted by Memphis, to compete for the title April 17-20.
Temple finished last season 8-12 overall.
