Men's Baseball Announces Captains for 2014 Season

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's baseball named its four captains for the upcoming 2014 season.  Ryan Kuehn, Matt Hockenberry, and Derek Peterson will serve as captains for the Owls.

"These young men have worked hard to earn this honor," head coach Ryan Wheeler said. "They are true leaders both on and off the field in every sense of the word.  I know they will do a great job of helping us reach our goals this season as we enter into the American Athletic Conference."

Ryan Kuehn, a 6-7 redshirt senior pitcher, came out of the bullpen for the Owls last season and appeared in 16 games.  Last season, Kuehn tossed 20.1 innings over which he posted a 2.21 ERA.  He was charged with 0 runs in 14 of 16 appearances, including his final eight (9.0 IP) of the season.  He notched five saves last season, tying for fourth all-time at Temple for most in a season, including two saves in the A-10 series win at VCU.  He was also named to Temple's President's Honor Roll (3.50 GPA or higher) last year.

Matt Hockenberry, a 6-3 senior pitcher, started six games and made nine appearances out of the bullpen in 2013.  Hockenberry picked up the win in the home-opener against Lafayette.  In his first start of the season against Holy Cross, he struck out a season-high six batters.  He threw three straight perfect relief appearances (all 1.0 IP).  He was also named to Temple's Director's Honor Roll (GPA 3.00-3.49)

Derek Peterson, a 6-3 senior infielder, was one of two players to start all 46 games for the Owls last season. Peterson was named to the All-Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Team. He led the Owls with 13 doubles and 82 total bases and ranked second on the team in hitting (.314) and hits (59).  He was also tied for the team lead in multi-hit games with 18, including three hits in the win at #24 Virginia Tech and a season-high four hits at Lehigh.  He was named to Temple's Director's Honor Roll last year.
