Temple Women’s Basketball Claims Second Win with 70-58 Victory at Delaware

11.12.13 | Women's Basketball

BOXSCORE

NEWARK, Del.
–Temple women's basketball team is 2-0 on the season after a 70-58 win at Delaware (1-1) on Tuesday evening.

"Our defense picked up," said sixth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza.  "We rallied and it gave us energy."

In the first half, Temple scored the first basket, but Delaware took over.  The Blue Hens went ahead by as many as nine points, 17-8, before the Owls rallied back.  Sophomore Meghan Roxas' (Ridgewood, N.J.) first of a career-high four three-pointers pulled TU within one, 19-18.  Moments later, junior Tyonna Williams' (Fort Washington, Md.) lay-up put the Owls ahead, 22-21. Then Temple started to roll.  The Owls led by five at intermission, 31-26.

"Our ball movement was stagnant," Cardoza said. "We thrive offensively when someone makes a big play and gives us a boost."

In the second half, Temple let Delaware back in early.  The Blue Hens chipped away at the lead.  While they tied the game at 46-46 with 12:58 to go, UD never led in the second stanza.  Temple went on an 18-1 run to pull ahead by 15 points, 62-47, and held UD to one basket over the last 12 minutes of the game.

"We can be a good team," Cardoza said. "That's two games in a row that we've held them in the second half. We just have to clamp down and do a great job defensively."

Senior Natasha Thames (Port Huron, Mich.) paced the Owls with 15 points and nine rebounds as five Owls netted double figures.  Roxas had 12 points on a career-high four three-point buckets. Freshman point guard Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) also had 12 points, while senior Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.) and Williams added 10 points apiece.

Shanice Johnson and Kelsey Buchanan led Delaware with double-doubles. Johnson had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Buchanan had 13 points and 10 boards.

Overall, Delaware out-rebounded Temple, 37-36. The Owls shot 42 percent from the floor (24-57) compared to the Hens' 39 percent (21-54).

Temple returns to Philadelphia for its home opener with Auburn on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. at McGonigle Hall.  For season ticket information, call 215-204-8499.
