PHILADELPHIA – Four outstanding student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to play at Temple University next season, head coach Tonya Cardoza announced on Thursday.
Joining the Owls are Tanaya Atkinson (New Haven, Conn.), Khadijah Berger (Hampton, Va.), Wendion Bibbins (Harvey, La.), and Alliya Butts (Edgewater Park, N.J.).
"My staff did an outstanding job attracting these four student-athletes to Temple University," Cardoza said. "We are very excited about this recruiting class and how they will impact the future of our program. This is one of the best overall classes we have signed during my tenure here at Temple. Khadijah, Alliya, Tanaya, and Wendion are all hard workers with extreme athleticism and skill level."
Atkinson, a 5-9 guard from Hill Regional Career HS, was the 2012 New Haven Register All-Area Most Valuable Player for coach Steve Bethke. As a junior, Atkinson averaged 20.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, 3.3 steals, 1.5 blocks, and an assist per game. She led the Panthers to a Southern Connecticut Conference crown en route to the Most Outstanding Player honors. She helped Career to the Class LL quarterfinals. Atkinson was an All-SCC and All-Connecticut High School Coaches Association selection as well as a New Haven Register All-Area and All-State selection. She played AUU ball for CT DA FAM.
"Everything is like a big family," Atkinson said to the New Haven Register. "It's the same at Career, I feel comfortable there. It's like home to me. It can't get any better than that."
Berger, a 5-10 guard from Hampton HS, was a 2013 All-USA Today Honorable Mention selection. She averaged 17.1 points as a junior. Berger played AAU ball with current Temple guard Feyonda Fitzgerald on Boo Williams' team. Temple assistant coach Way Veney is also a graduate of Hampton HS.
"I felt comfortable there when I visited," Berger said to the Daily Press. "I felt I could show my talents at Temple, and it felt like home. I like the environment, I like the city life, and obviously I like the coaching staff. (Tonya) Cardoza was a big part of my decision. I know she'll have a big impact on my game."
Bibbins, a 6-1 forward from Helen Cox HS, was a 2012 LSWA Class 4A Honorable Mention All-State selection. Bibbins also participated in several jumps for the track and field team. She played AAU ball for the Lady Blues.
"The coaches are real cool, and I can relate to them. I can relate to the team and it's a great environment to be in. I wanted to be far away," Bibbins said to the Times-Picayune. "I wanted to experience life in a different environment."
Butts, a 5-4 point guard from Holy Cross HS, led Burlington County in scoring last season with 25.2 points per game, helping the Lancers to a 17-11 record. She also led the county in three-point buckets made with 39. She scored her 1,000th career point as a junior. Named to the ELITE 100 Watch List, she played AAU ball for the Philly Freedom.
"(Temple) was my top choice," Butts said to the Phillyburbs.com. "It's close to home, and I like it there. I like the coaches, the atmosphere, everything."
The Temple Owls (2-0) host SEC powerhouse Auburn (2-0) in the home opener on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. in McGonigle Hall. For season ticket information, call 215-204-8499.
