Conference Rivals Play 60 Minute Thriller
11.2.13 | Football
PISCATAWAY, NJ - In the 36th meeting between Temple and Rutgers, and the last until 2020, the two rivals gave the 46,447 in attendance at High Point Solutions Stadium a taste of football they are sure going to miss. While Temple will stay in the American Athletic Conference next season, Rutgers will transfer to the Big 10.
The game between two schools, who are just 65 miles apart, was a see-saw battle to the very end with the game decided in the 59th minute. Rutgers QB Gary Nova hit WR Leonte Carroo with his second lead-changing touchdown to put Rutgers up for good, 23-20.
Temple started with the ball and freshman QB P.J. Walker, who was coming off his only start without an interception, threw one on the second play of the game. Rutgers, starting off with great field position at their own 45, moved the ball to the 16 yard line and went for it on 4th and 1. That run by RB Justin Goodwin was thwarted by MLB Nate D. Smith with a tackle for loss.
Following an exchange of punts, Temple got the ball at its own 8. The Owls then mounted a touchdown drive, marching 92 yards in eight plays. A mix of freshman RB Zaire Williams and junior RB Kenneth Harper running sprinkled in with a few completions by Walker moved the ball downfield. The drive was capped by a 26-yard touchdown pass from Walker to sophomore WR Robby Anderson. A missed extra point by Nick Visco gave the Owls a 6-0 lead.
On Rutgers ensuing drive, they went 12 plays and managed to get to the 1 yard line but three straight Scarlet Knight penalties pushed them back to the 16 and they had to settle for a 30-yard field goal by Kyle Federico.
Temple's next possession stalled on the 44 yard line before punter Paul Layton kicked a 54 yard punt that went out of bounds at the one yard line. A quick 3-and-out and a 26-yard punt by Rutgers Mick Marsh gave the Owls the ball at the Rutgers 36.That 28-yard change in field position gave the Owls an advantage. Subsequently, Temple marched the ball downfield and scored on a 4-yard pass from Walker to Harper.
Following a missed field goal by Rutgers, the half ended at 13-3 in Temple's favor.
In the second half, the teams exchanged possessions before Rutgers marched in for a score of its own. The three-play, 53-yard drive was highlighted by a 41-yard catch-and-run by WR Quron Pratt. A facemask penalty on the play by CB Abdul Smith brought the ball to the 6 yard line. Two plays later, Nova hit FB Michael Burton for a four-yard touchdown. A missed extra point left Rutgers trailing, 13-9.
Once again the teams traded possessions. Then, at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Temple started with the ball on its own 29. On the second play of the drive, Walker threw his second interception of the game, this one to LB Jamal Merrell. On the very next play, with the ball on the 34 yard line, Nova found a wide open Carroo in the end zone for a touchdown giving Rutgers a 16-13 lead.
The Owls responded with a touchdown drive of their own. They engineered a 62-yard drive in nine plays culminating in a 20-yard touchdown run by Harper. That gave Harper a rushing and receiving touchdown in each of the past two games. The Visco extra point was good giving TU a 20-16 lead with 10:57 remaining.
Rutgers moved the ball downfield aided by two Temple penalties. Eventually DT Matt Ioannidis forced RB Justin Goodwin to fumble and LB Blaze Caponegro recovered to give the Owls the ball at their own 15 yard line.
With a four point lead the Owls did what they needed to do, they sustained a 14-play, 57-yard drive eating up 7:04 on the clock. However, with 4th-and-1 at the Rutgers 27 yard line they failed to convert.
Rutgers then moved the ball to the 33 yard line. A sack of Nova put the ball on the 38 and LB Sharif Finch came up with the ball. The officials declared no fumble and called Finch for delay of game. That put the ball on the 33 and with 4th-and-10, Nova connected with Carroo for a second go-ahead touchdown of the game, this time with 0:28 remaining.
Temple got the ball one last time but fumbled it away and the game ended 23-20 in favor of Rutgers.
