SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Temple women's basketball fell at No. 23 Syracuse, 82-76, on Monday night at the Carrier Dome.

The Orange improved to 9-1 on the season, while the Owls fell to 5-3 overall.  The loss was TU's first on the road this season after a 3-0 start.

In the first half, Syracuse jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead.  Junior Rateska Brown (Alvin, S.C.) put the Owls on the scoreboard with a three-pointer. She finished with three treys in the half.  The Orange went ahead by as many as 18 points, 32-14. The Owls came within 11 points at intermission, 43-32, as freshman point guard Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) scored the final seven points of the stanza.

Temple stormed out of the locker room with a 16-6 run to come within one, 48-49, with 14:11 to go. Then sophomore Erica Covile (Detroit, Mich.) gave the Owls their first lead with a lay-up. Temple went up by six, 57-51, before Syracuse retaliated.  The Orange tied the game at 59-59 before reclaiming the lead for good with a 9-1 run. The Owls came within five points in the final minute of play, but it wasn't enough.

"We dug ourselves into a hole to start with turnovers and giving them easy opportunities," said sixth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza.  "We did everything to get back into the game.  It's hard to sustain that energy.  We played our butts off, but nothing went right down the stretch. I felt we left everything out on the floor."

Fitzgerald led the Owls with a career-high 28 points. Senior Natasha Thames' (Port Huron, Mich.) had her second double-double of the season (seventh of career) with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Covile finished with 12 points, and Brown had 10.

Shakeya Leary led Syracuse with 24 points and 13 rebounds.  Brittney Sykes had 20 points.

Overall, Temple out-rebounded Syracuse, 46-40. The Owls shot 47 percent from the field (15-32) in the second half while holding SU to 30 percent (13-43).

Temple returns home to host two games before the holidays.  The Owls entertain Howard on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. at McGonigle Hall.
