Women's Basketball Opens American Play at Memphis on Sunday

Temple closes out 2013 and opens a new era, travelling to Memphis on Sunday, Dec. 29 for the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Tip-off at Roane Fieldhouse is set for 2 p.m. CT?(3 p.m. ET).
The American Digital Network will televise the game live online with Jeff Brightwell calling the action and Liz Lay providing color analysis.
The Owls return home to McGonigle Hall to usher in 2014 with their conference home opener against No. 7 Louisville on Wednesday, Jan. 1. Tip-off on ESPN3 is set for 4 p.m. Dave Leno (pbp) and Julianne Viani (color) will call the game.

The Owls, under sixth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza, stand 6-4 on the season after a heart-breaking 59-58 loss to Villanova on Dec. 22.
After 10 games, freshman Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) is the Owls' leading scorer with 16.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Senior Natasha Thames (Port Huron, Mich.) follows with 12.9 ppg and 7.3 rpg. Senior Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.) adds 10.7 ppg and a team-best 7.7 rpg. Junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) also adds 9.9 points and 5.0 apg.

This season, Temple women's basketball will compete as a member of the American Athletic Conference after 30 seasons with the Atlantic 10 Conference. For the first time in school history, the majority of Temple's sports teams will compete in the same conference.
In conference openers, Temple stands 16-14 overall (since 1983-84) and is currently riding a three-game winning streak.
SCOUTING MEMPHIS
The Tigers, under the guidance of sixth-year head coach Melissa McFerrin, stand 7-5 on the season after a 91-45 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Dec. 20.
Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn is the only player averaging double figures with 18.3 ppg and 3.8 rpg. Sophomore forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey follows with 9.5 ppg and 3.0 rpg.

SCOUTING LOUISVILLE
The No. 7 Cardinals, under the guidance of seventh-year head coach Jeff Walz, stand 12-1 on the season after a 69-62 win over No. 11/14 Colorado on Dec. 21. Louisville has an eight-day break before visiting Temple.
Senior guard Shoni Schimmel is the Cardinals' top scorer with 16.1 ppg and 4.5 rpg. Junior forward Sara Hammond follows with 10.8 ppg and 6.4 rpg, while senior forward Asia Taylor grabs a team-best 6.5 rpg.

VS. RANKED FOES
Temple stands 0-2 against nationally ranked teams so far this season. But the Owls have put up good fights.
TU fell at No. 23 Syracuse, 82-76, on Dec. 16. TU came back from an 18-point deficit to take a six-point lead in the second half, but ran out of gas in the game's final minutes.
Temple dropped a 74-70 decision to No. 21/18 Michigan State on Nov. 26. The Owls led by seven points in the second stanza, but MSU surged in the final 37 seconds of action.
Since 1976, Temple has upset 12 teams ranked in the Top 25. The Owls' last upset came against No. 13 Xavier on Feb. 25, 2009, with a 74-65 victory at the Liacouras Center. TU?has faced the nation's No. 1 team six times and is still looking for an upset.
Temple has been nationally ranked twice in its history. Under head coach Dawn Staley, the Owls earned their first national ranking during the 2004-05 season and were ranked for eight weeks, reaching as high as No. 15 in both polls. The following season (2005-06), TU was ranked the entire season, reaching as high as No. 16.
