Volleyball's Gabriella Matautia Named to American Athletic Conference First Team

12.3.13 | Women's Volleyball

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Capping numerous awards already earned in the 2013 season, Temple volleyball's Gabriella Matautia has been named to the American Athletic Conference First Team. Twelve athletes in the 10-team conference were named to both the first team and second team in a vote by the league's head coaches.

Matautia led the Owls and ranked second in the conference with 3.43 kills/set, playing in 110 of Temple's 111 total sets this season. She helped lead the team to an 18-12 overall record, and finished with 1,248 kills in her career.

Over four years, Matautia was a consistent leader for Temple volleyball both on and off the court. In addition to her 1,248 career kills, she amassed 901 career digs. She played in 109 matches as an Owl, and started in 100 of those. Matautia was a preseason All-American Athletic Conference Team selection, and was named the American's Player of the Week on Sept. 9.

She earned MVP honors at the Patriot Invitational early in the season, and was named to All-Tournament Teams at all four of the Owls' tournaments. As a junior, Matautia was named to the Atlantic 10 First Team and Atlantic 10 All-Championship Team. As a kinesiology major, she has been named to Temple's Director's Honor Roll in each year of her career for having a GPA above 3.0.

USF sophomore Erin Fairs was named the American's Player of the Year. Louisville's Caitlin Welch was named Libero of the Year, while teammate Maya McClendon was a unanimous selection as Freshman of the Year. SMU's Avery Acker garnered Setter of the Year honors. Anne Kordes, who led Louisville to the inaugural championship, was named Coach of the Year.
