PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's basketball dropped a 73-53 decision to city rival Saint Joseph's in Philadelphia Big 5 action before a boisterous crowd on Wednesday night at McGonigle Hall.
The Owls fell to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Big 5 play, while the Hawks improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in city play.
"We weren't effected by the noise," said sixth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza. "We have to be mentally tougher. If you're not capitalizing on easy buckets, you're not going to beat a good team like St. Joe's. This was our opportunity; we gave it away. We didn't match their intensity."
In the first half, SJU stormed out to a 12-point lead, 17-5, over the first 10 minutes of action. The Hawks built their lead to as many as 14 points, 26-12, before TU came alive. Fueled by senior Natasha Thames' (Port Huron, Mich.) 15 first-half points, the Owls went on a 19-2 run to take over the lead, 31-28 with two minutes to go in the stanza. SJU held a two-point lead, 34-32, at intermission.
"We did a good job of getting ourselves back in the game in the first half with our defense," Cardoza said.
In the second half, Saint Joe's quickly re-built its lead by 10 points, 48-38, before going ahead by as many as 20 for the final score.
"We stopped attacking," she added about her team's second-half performance. "We had a lot of easy shots that we missed."
Thames finished with 19 points. Freshman point guard Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) was the only other Owl in double figures with 12 points. Senior Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.) grabbed nine rebounds.
Natasha Cloud led SJU with 21 points and 13 assists. Ilze Gotfrida followed with 12 points, while Erin Shields added 11 points.
"Cloud did a great job," she said.
Overall, Temple out-rebounded Saint Joseph's, 44-35. The Owls shot 30 percent from the floor (18-60) compared to the Hawks' 44 percent (23-52).
Temple takes a 10-day break for final exams before heading west to Montana on Saturday, Dec. 14 for a 7 p..m. MT (9 p.m. ET) contest.
