PHILADELPHIA - The dual meet season officially begins for Temple fencing on Sunday, Dec. 8 when the Owls head to the Sacred Heart Invitational. Temple will face Harvard, NYU, Sacred Heart and Vassar to record its first team scores of the season.
In a similar meet to open the season last year, the Owls went 4-0 with wins over NYU, Sacred Heart, Vassar and Penn. Current Owls Epiphany Georges (foil) and Tiki Kastor (sabre) helped lead the team with records of 8-1 and 6-1, respectively.
In the Owls' first meet of the season, the 34th Annual Temple Open, Kastor took first place in sabre. Temple fencers have traveled to one other meet so far, the November NAC - DivI/U-20 Event, where Petra Khan had an impressive 16th-place finish in sabre at a meet open to fencers of all levels.
Team captain Tasia Ford said the fencers have been putting in extra time and are looking forward to the first dual competition of the year.
"We've been working really hard this season and have had a few strong warm-up competitions already," said Ford, "but this week especially, we've stepped it up with more bouts in practice and coming in on study days in the morning. I think we're feeling really strong leading into this weekend. We're all excited for the first dual meet, and our freshmen are even more excited because they've never done this before. It will be a really good first meet for them."
Temple head coach Nikki Franke likes the timing of the meet as the team will soon be gone for the holiday break.
"This meet will be a good way to end the semester," she said. "Harvard is a nationally ranked team, so that will be our strongest competition, but we'll also be challenged by Sacred Heart and the other teams. I feel we have prepared well for it, and we're really looking forward to our freshmen competing in their first collegiate dual meet. This will give us a chance to see where we are and to utilitize the things we've been working on this semester."
After this Sunday's meet, Temple will have a month before its next weekend of competition. The Owls will host the annual Alumnae Meet on Saturday, Jan. 11, before heading to the Penn State Invitational on Jan. 12.Â
