HAVERFORD, Pa. - In the first meet of the indoor season for Temple women's track and field, junior Jenna Dubrow broke a 31-year old school record in the 5000m run to highlight a successful day for the program at the Jack Pyrah Invitational.
Both Dubrow and teammate Anna Pavone broke the old school record of 18:00.2, set back in 1982 by Sheila D'Alo. Dubrow's time of 17:26.10 set the record and earned her second place in the event, while Pavone placed third with a time of 17:31.14.
Those strong performances and many others came just a day after the track and field program learned that it's men's indoor and outdoor teams are two of seven that will be cut as varsity sports after this school year. Head track and field coach Eric Mobley said he was extremely proud of how the entire team responded.
"It was really great to see the support everyone had for each other today, and the way everyone competed," said Mobley. "They really came together as a team, and we had some alumni show up as well. We didn't know how the athletes would respond, and you hope for the best. They came out and performed well and really went after it. I was very proud of both teams today."
Mobley was particularly pleased with the showing by Dubrow and Pavone, and extremely impressed at the breaking of a 31-year-old school record. He was also pleased by the performance of Kiersten LaRoche in the long jump, the women's 4x400m relay team, and Kaitlyn McSurdy's showing in the 500m.
LaRoche took an individual title in the long jump with her mark of 18'8" (5.69 m), while freshman Bionca St. Fleur placed fifth in the same event.
Yet another highlight for the women's team was a first-place finish in the 4x400m relay in a time of 4:02.23, and Mobley also pointed out McSurdy's performance in the 500m run, as she ran a lifetime-best 1:20.93 to place fourth in the event.
Freshman Simone Brownlee placed fourth in the 60m hurdles in 9.32, and freshman Jimmia McCluskey also finished fourth in the 60m event with a time of 7.92.
