Temple Volleyball Completes Another Successful Season

PHILADELPHIA - The 2013 season recently ended for Temple volleyball, and the Owls experienced yet another run of success this year after seeing a huge turnaround in 2012 from the year before.Â
2013 Temple Volleyball Season Highlights
• Temple finished 18-12 overall, marking the Owls' second straight season with a winning percentage of .600 or better.
• The Owls were picked to finish seventh in the Preseason American Athletic Conference Coaches Poll, and bettered that spot by one, finishing sixth in the standings at 9-9.
• Head Coach Bakeer Ganes completed his third season, and now has an overall record of 45-43 at Temple, which includes a record of 37-23 over the last two seasons.
• Senior Gabriella Matautia was named to the 2013 American Athletic Conference First Team.
• Matautia was also named to the Preseason American Athletic Conference team, and was the American Player of the Week on Sept. 9.
• As a team, Temple finished second in the conference in service aces (1.31 aces/set) and third in digs (16.01 digs/set)...Sophomore Sandra Sydlik's 0.33 aces/set ranked second among individuals in the conference.
• Matautia led the team and ranked second in the league with 3.43 kills per set, and finished her career with 1,248 kills.
• Senior Elyse Burkert also reached the 1,000-kill plateau for her career, finishing with 1,090 kills.
• The Owls had a seven-match win streak early in the season (starting 7-1) and later won five straight matches early in the conference season (starting 6-1).
• Temple won the George Mason Patriot Invitational with 3-1 wins vs. Radford, Coppin State and George Mason...Matautia was named the MVP and Best Attacker, while Sandra Sydlik was named Best Setter.
• Matautia and Sydlik were both named to the University at Buffalo Invitational All-Tournament Team and the Temple Invitational All-Tournament Team.
• Matautia was named Best Opposite at the Penn Invitational.
