PHILADELPHIA—On Tuesday afternoon, the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference released its weekly women's gymnastics awards. Earning recognition for Sunday's efforts at Ursinus, junior Brittanie DeMeno was named the conference's Gymnast of the Week, while freshman Tara Kilkenny was tabbed with this week's Coaches' Choice award. Temple has had members on the ECAC's honor in four of the last five weeks, including three Coaches' Choice award winners.
Ever since she started working the all-around, junior Brittanie DeMeno has had her sights set on reaching a combined score of 38.000.
On Sunday, Temple defeated Ursinus with its season-best team score (190.675) to win its first meet of the season.
DeMeno was a major contributor in her squad's victory, as she accomplished her career-long goal. Against the Bears, she was awarded a 38.200 through the four events she worked, giving her first place in the all-around. The Staten Island gymnast's combined score included a career-best figure on bars, which was a 9.550.
Making her Temple debut against Ursinus on Sunday, freshman Tara Kilkenny got the nod to perform for the Owls on bars at the last minute, due to freshman Hannah Popper dislocating her elbow during warm-ups.
Kilkenny stepped in and was a catalyst for the Owls, who won the competition on bars for the first time this season. Her performance that earned her a score of 9.675 was sensational enough to rank as Temple's highest in the lineup and third overall in the competition.
DeMeno and Kilkenny are preparing for the Towson Invitational, which will be held on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
