PHILADELPHIA—Temple Baseball heads to Blacksburg, Va. this weekend to play against Virginia Tech and Holy Cross. The Owls will open weekend play at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with a single game against the Hokies before closing out the road trip with a doubleheader against Holy Cross on Sunday at Virginia Tech's English Field.
Temple (0-2) will look to pick up its first win of the season after dropping a pair of games to Wright State and Delaware on its opening day last Friday. The Owls had their opening weekend shortened, as they had games against Monmouth and Toledo cancelled due to the inclement weather in Cary, N.C.. Virginia Tech is 4-0 after sweeping Kent State and UNC Wilmington last weekend, while Holy Cross (0-0) will be getting its 2013 campaign underway.
Senior Dan Moller will toe the rubber for the second time in three games when the Owls meet the Hokies Saturday. The southpaw will be looking to notch his first win of the season, as he looks to rebound from last Friday's loss to Wright State.
Shortstop Nick Lustrino is leading the team in batting average (.500) after his 3-for-6 weekend, which included hitting his first career home run. Redshirt sophomore Connor Reilly and senior Henry Knabe displayed their power last weekend also, as they both smashed solo home runs of their own.
Virginia Tech is coming a strong offensive weekend scoring at least seven runs in all four games they played last weekend. Junior third baseman Chad Pinder hit two home runs in 14 at-bats, while knocking in nine RBIs. Last season he was second on the team in home runs (7) and slugging percentage (.538).
Holy Cross finished 33-22 overall last season, 13-7 in the Patriot League which was second in the league behind Army (18-2). They were tied for first in the 2013 Patriot League preseason poll with Army. Senior outfielder Patrick Puentes led the team in batting average hitting a .343 and junior outfielder finished second the team in home runs (5).
Holy Cross had six players named to the Preseason All-Patriot League team including senior relief John Collela who appeared in 29 games totaling 54.1 innings pitched recording six wins and 2.32 ERA.
