PHILADELPHIA - After a two-game road swing, Temple women's basketball returns home this Sunday, Feb. 10 to face Saint Louis at 2:00 p.m. in the Liacouras Center. The Owls (10-12, 3-4) lost their most recent game at Charlotte, but had won two in a row prior to that. Saint Louis (10-12, 4-3) is coming off back-to-back wins over Xavier and Massachusetts.
THE OPENING TIP
•Temple is looking to rebound after a tough loss at Charlotte (66-43 on Feb. 6) that saw the Owls go scoreless for more than nine minutes to close out the game...Victoria Macaulay led Temple with 15 points but fouled out with almost six minutes remaining.
•Prior to the Charlotte loss, Temple won back-to-back games over Richmond (61-48) and at UMass (66-54)...Sophomore Tyonna Williams led the Owls in both wins, scoring 17 points vs. Richmond and a career-high 23 points at UMass.
•Temple currently ranks first among all teams in NCAA Division I in three-point field goal defense at 23.4 percent.
•Temple won its conference opener at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13 but then lost three straight league games, ending with a 71-55 loss to La Salle on Jan. 27, suffering a defeat at the hands of the Explorers for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.
•Temple played its final non-conference game of the regular season on Jan. 23, defeating Penn 59-51...The Owls' lead of 24 was enough to hold off a late rally by the Quakers and snap a two-game losing streak.
•Before this year, the Owls had not lost back-to-back Atlantic 10 games since the 2002-03 season...The four conference losses are now the most since Temple went 12-4 in the A-10 in 2005-06.
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza got the 100th win of her career in the Owls' 67-59 win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13...The milestone came in Temple's A-10 opener, and against the only team to defeat the Owls in the A-10 regular season last year.
•Senior Victoria Macaulay recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds at UMass on Feb. 3.
•Macaulay blocked a career-high seven shots in the win at UMass on Feb. 3, tying for fourth all-time at Temple in a single game...She currently ranks 20th among all players in NCAA Division I with 2.38 blocks per game.
•Six of Temple's losses this season were to teams with strong records and strong RPI's, Charlotte (17-4), Duquesne (14-3), Georgetown (9-4), Michigan State (12-1), Villanova (9-1) and Auburn (8-2).
•Temple was the only team to defeat Syracuse during its non-conference season, back on Dec. 2...The Orangewomen are now 19-3 and ranked 24th in the AP Poll Poll...Their only other losses came to #3/2 Connecticut and Villanova.
•Temple has six freshmen on a roster of 11, making the Owls the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season (San Jose State is in the top spot).
•Saint Louis is 10-12 overall and 4-3 in the A-10...The Billikens have won two straight and three of the last four...Junior foward Lorreal Jones leads SLU with 11.8 ppg and 8.5 rpg.
SCOUTING SAINT LOUIS
Saint Louis is 10-12 overall and 4-3 in the A-10, having won two straight and three of the last four. The Billikens defeated UMass on Feb. 7 at home, 59-50, and before that they got a 66-49 win at Xavier. Junior forward Lorreal Jones leads SLU in both scoring and rebounding with 11.8 ppg to go with 8.5 rpg. The Billikens have a balanced offense with four other players averaging between 8.8 and 9.1 ppg. SLU is under new leadership this season, as Lisa Stone is in her first year with the program. She is not a rookie coach however, having been a head coach for 26 seasons before arriving in Saint Louis.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST SAINT LOUIS
Temple has never lost to Saint Louis, going 7-0 since the series began in 2006. Last year the Owls got a 66-50 road win, and two years ago they cruised to an 82-48 win at home.
DOWNTOWN DEFENDERS
After being stingy on three-point defense all season, the Owls have recently taken it to a new level. They held Richmond to a single trey in 15 attempts on Jan. 31, held UMass to 3-of-18 (16.7%) from behind the arc on Feb. 3, and held Charlotte to 2-of-10 shooting (20%) from three-point range on Feb. 6. Temple is now ranked first in NCAA Division I in three-point field goal defense at 23.5 percent.
COLD IN CHARLOTTE
The Owls kept things close in the first half at Charlotte on Feb. 6, but Temple's offense disappeared for much of the second half. Victoria Macaulay, who scored a team-high 15 points, hit the last field goal of the game for Temple with 12:21 remaining. The Owls made six free throws over the next few minutes, but hit the sixth with 9:26 on the clock and did not score again in the 66-43 loss. Temple's second-half shooting percentage of 20.8 (5-of-24) was its worst of the season, and for the game, the Owls went 0-for-11 from three-point range.
ACCEPTING CHARITY
Sophomore Tyonna Williams is shooting 75.6 percent from the free throw line this season, but has hit them at a 90 percent clip over Temple's last six games. She has missed only three free throws in that stretch, going 28-of-31. On her way to scoring a career-high 23 points in the win at UMass, she hit a career-high 8-of-9 at the line.
STARTERS GET IT DONE
Temple's bench had been key for a stretch of recent games, but in the last three games, two of them wins, it has been the starters' time to shine. All but four points have been scored by the Owls' five starters in the last three games combined. Four of them finished in double figures in a 61-48 win vs. Richmond on Jan. 31, and three did so in a 66-54 win vs. UMass on Feb. 3. Tyonna Williams led the way in both games with 17 points vs. Richmond and a career-high 23 at UMass. Rateska Brown scored 12 vs. Richmond and 21 at UMass, while Victoria Macaulay scored 12 points and 14 points, respectively, along with a team-high 15 points at Charlotte on Feb. 6. The five starters have also accounted for 121 of 126 rebounds, 20 of 23 steals and 42 of 43 assists.
SWEET REVENGE
The only blemish on Temple's A-10 slate last season was a loss to St. Bonaventure, and the Owls avenged that defeat with a win over the Bonnies in this year's A-10 opener. The 67-59 win was not an easy one, as Temple trailed by seven with six minutes left. The Owls closed the game on an impressive, 19-4 run to come away victorious and give head coach Tonya Cardoza the 100th win of her career.
WILLIAMS NAMED BIG 5 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After leading the Owls to a 2-0 week with wins against Richmond and at UMass, sophomore Tyonna Williams was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Feb. 4. She led Temple with 17 points in the Richmond win, and followed it up with a career-high 23 points at UMass.
CARDOZA WINS THE 100TH GAME OF HER CAREER
Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza got the 100th win of her career in the Owls' 67-59 win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13. The milestone came in Temple's A-10 opener, which was against the only team to defeat the Owls in the A-10 regular season last year. Cardoza is now 103-50, and reached her 100th win four games sooner than her predecessor Dawn Staley, who had 50 losses before reaching 100 wins.
