Four Selected To Represent #9 Temple Fencing At 2013 NCAA Championships
3.12.13 | Women's Fencing
INDIANAPOLIS---On Tuesday evening, the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee officially announced the field of 144 qualifiers for the 2013 Women's Fencing NCAA Championships. Representing the No. 9 Temple Owls will be juniors Epiphany Georges, Kimberly Howell, sophomore Tiki Kastor and freshman Fatima Largaespada. The four first-time national qualifiers will compete March 21-24 at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas.
Georges, a folist, was selected following her stellar performance on Saturday at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional, held at Lafayette, where she reached the finals and finished sixth overall. Joining her at Nationals in foil will be Largaespada, who was a 10th-place finisher at Regionals.
Kastor also reached the finals at Regionals on Saturday, helping her case for being selected to the women's national field of 72. In sabre, Kastor put up an outstanding effort to earn fifth place, making her Temple's highest finisher at the NCAA Regionals.
Nationals will be a homecoming for Howell. Last weekend at Regionals, the San Antonio, Texas native placed in a 15th place tie in the epee semifinals. Earlier this season, Howell went undefeated in her bouts at two different meets and also generated national attention when she was named a College Fencing 360 “Primetime Performer of the Week”.
The National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships include individual events in each of the six weapons (men's foil, men's epee, men's sabre, women's foil, women's epee, women's sabre).
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top-four finishers will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the losers being awarded a tie for third place.
An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
