2013 Spring Outlook

The Temple Owls are anxious to take the field for spring drills in 2013. After posting back-to-back BIG EAST wins for a 2-0 start in league play for the first time in school history, Temple opens spring practice on Friday, March 22.  The 15 sessions over five weeks should help identify the team's needs before the freshmen join the ranks in August.

Change seems to be the only constant for Temple football.  The Owls, who finished the 2012 season at 4-7 overall and 2-5 in their return to BIG EAST Conference play, welcome a new head coach this spring, their third in four years.

Head coach Matt Rhule is no stranger to Temple.  The former Owls' assistant coach for six seasons returned to take the reins after eight months in the NFL coaching ranks. He is disciplined, determined, and vested. He is truly Temple Made.  His staff is young and energetic.

While Temple football will be adjusting to a new coaching staff, the Owls await conference news. The BIG EAST formally announced a separation with its basketball schools in early March. The football schools will play under a new name, a new yet-to-be-determined brand, to be announced later this spring.

But the Temple Owls pride themselves on overcoming adversity. In 2012, Temple rewrote eight school records in its 63-32 win at Army.  TU finished sixth nationally in punting (40.76) behind senior Brandon McManus, the all-time Temple scoring leader.

Taking the field this spring are 68 returning student-athletes, including 45 letterwinners and 14 starters.  Joining the Owls this spring are seven mid-year transfers.

In February, Temple signed 23 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Geographically, all 23 signees came from within TU's recruiting footprint. All but four live within 200 miles (or less) of campus.  Ten student-athletes list their hometown in Pennsylvania and 10 hail from New Jersey.

Ten of the 19 high school signees attended the Temple Football Camp (53%). Seven of the signees—Dion Dawkins, Paul Layton, Jihaad Pretlow, John Rizzo, Averee Robinson, Adrian Sullivan, and Kiser Terry— enrolled in classes in January and will participate in spring drills.

OFFENSE

The Temple offense returns eight players to starting positions among the 27 lettermen. Under the direction of first-year offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield, TU will utilize a pro spread system.

Directing the offense are two experienced quarterbacks-- senior Chris Coyer, the Offensive MVP of the 2011 New Mexico Bowl, and Clinton “Juice” Granger.

In nine starts, Coyer went 84-of-164 for 946 yards and eight touchdowns while rushing for 444 yards and two touchdowns last fall. Granger who started the last two games, was 31-of-55 for 370 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 206 yards and a touchdown on 42 carries.

In addition to the two starters, Satterfield will guide sophomore Chad McCloskey, senior Kevin Newsome, junior Connor Reilly, and redshirt freshman Thomas Rumer. Newsome saw action in two contests last fall off the bench.  Reilly, Temple's only male two-sport athlete (also plays baseball), saw action in all 11 games last fall as the holder on special teams. McCloskey and Rumer have not seen game action yet.

In his first season, coach Allen Mogridge will develop a youthful offensive line. Returning four starters, seniors Sean Boyle, Evan Regas, Scott Roorda, and Jeff Whittingham will lead the pack.

Returning for a sixth season (medical redshirt), Boyle started the first seven games at center before suffering an injury. Sophomore Kyle Friend finished out the season, starting the last four games with 11 appearances overall.  Sophomore Jacob Quinn is expected to provide depth.

At left tackle, sophomore Zach Hooks is expected to resume his starting role.  He started all 11 games as a redshirt freshman last fall. Junior Joe Cenatiempo, true freshmen Dion Dawkins and Adrian Sullivan will vie for playing time.

At left guard, Whittingham returns to his starting role.  A starter in all 11 games in 2012, he was one of just seven Owls to start every game.  Regas and redshirt freshman Brendan McGowan will battle for position.  Regas played in all 11 games last season, mostly on special teams.

Roorda will be the veteran up front, leading the Owls at right guard. Seeing action in 11 contests a year ago, he started the last four games.  Junior Adam Metz and sophomore Will Rathbone will back him up.

Expected to take over at right tackle is sophomore Eric Lofton, filling the vacancy left by graduating All-BIG EAST honoree Martin Wallace. Lofton saw action in every game last fall, mostly on special teams. Junior Elijah Grant and sophomore Raymond Korang will provide support.

Returning to the sidelines after two seasons in the front office is tight ends coach Ed Foley. Seniors Cody Booth, Alex Jackson, and Chris Parthemore are expected to compete for the starting nod. Booth started all 11 games last fall, finishing second in receiving overall (and top tight end) with 137 yards and four touchdowns on 17 receptions. Jackson saw action in each game with four starts.  He had nine receptions for 99 yards. Parthemore saw limited action in three contests.

Adding depth are juniors Evan Battallio and Wanemi Omuso.

Seventh-year running backs coach Tyree Foreman has the biggest shoes to fill, replacing All-American Montel Harris and BIG EAST Specialist of the Year Matt Brown.

The Owls will rely on the speed of junior Kenny Harper and sophomore Jamie Gilmore.  Last fall, Harper had 65 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. He was third in receiving with 13 receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown. In seven games, Gilmore had 94 yards on 20 carries as a true freshman.

Also competing for time will be sophomores Hassan Dixon and Spencer Reid, as well as redshirt freshmen Jordan Spector and Avery Williams.

First-year wide receivers coach Terry Smith has a plethora of talent in his arsenal.  Seniors Deon Miller and Ryan Alderman, and junior Jalen Fitzpatrick are expected to assume starting roles.

After 11 games, Fitzpatrick was the Owls' top receiver with 30 catches for 363 yards and two touchdowns last fall. Miller had seven receptions for 101 yards, while Alderman had five catches for 51 yards.

Several Owls will be lining up for playing time— sophomore Robbie Anderson, junior Zack Bambary, sophomore Samuel Benjamin, sophomore John Christopher, sophomore Romond Deloatch, redshirt freshman Nathan Hairston, senior Tyron Harris, sophomore Khalif Herbin, junior Brett Pierce, and redshirt freshman James Whitfield. True freshman John Rizzo is expected to see action at fullback.

DEFENSE

The Temple defense needs to reload, losing four starters, including All-BIG EAST honoree John Youboty.  Under the guidance of first-year defensive coordinator Phil Snow, the Owls return 18 letterwinners, including six starters.

First-year line coach Brandon Noble has to fill both end positions, vacated by graduating team captain Marcus Green and Youboty.  Senior Sean Daniels, who played in 11 games with one start last season, returns.  Junior Jaimen Newman, who played six games at right guard last fall, switches to defense for the first time since high school.  Competing for starting nods will be sophomores Brandon Chudnoff and Avery Ellis who both saw action last fall. Providing depth are sophomore Shabaz Ahmed, junior Obi Onejeme, redshirt freshman Bryan Osei, junior Kyle Regensburg, freshman Kiser Terry, and senior Dan Van Norton.

At nose tackle, senior Levi Brown is expected to continue in his starting role. The two-year starter saw action in all 11 games, racking up 27 tackles, 3.5 TFL, and two fumble recoveries.  Sophomore Hershey Walton, who started three games last fall, and redshirt freshman Bret Niederreither are expected to compete for playing time.

At tackle, senior Kamal Johnson hopes to move into a starting role.  Sophomore Matt Ioannidis and true freshman Averee Robinson complete the competition.

Linebacking coach Mike Siravo returns to Temple after six years. His unit returns all three starters.

Freshman All-American and BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Tyler Matakevich returns for his second season in the Cherry and White. The ECAC Defensive Rookie of the Year played in all 11 games, starting eight games last fall.  One of just four true freshmen to earn a starting role for the Owls, Matakevich became the first freshman in school history to record 100 tackles. He led the Temple defense in his inaugural campaign with 101 tackles, including 67 solo stops, three TFL, three break-ups, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble.  Redshirt freshman Haason Reddick and junior Marc Tyson will provide depth.

Sophomore Nate D. Smith controls the middle.  In 11 games last fall, he finished second in tackling with 75 tackles, including 51 solo stops, a team-best 6.5 TFL, 3.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, two break-ups, a fumble recovery, and a hurry.  Seniors Olaniyi Adewole and Wyatt Benson, who played fullback last year, will challenge for playing time.

Two-year starter and senior Blaze Caponegro rounds out the returning starters at linebacker. He had 30 tackles and two sacks last fall.  Sophomore Rob Dvoracek and redshirt freshman Michael Kalaman will provide depth.

The cornerbacks, under the guidance of Francis Brown, are stacked with experience. Senior Zamel Johnson and junior Anthony Robey are expected to resume their starting roles.  In nine starts last fall, Johnson racked up 23 tackles and four break-ups.  Robey, who started all 11 contests, had 41 tackles and a team-best six break-ups. Adding depth will be junior Daquan Cooper, who played in 10 games last fall, sophomore Tavon Young who saw action in 10 games as a true freshman.

Looking for playing time will be sophomore Ikeem Boyd, sophomore Will Hayes, redshirt freshman Damiere Shaw, and sophomore Brandon Shippen.

Brown will have his hands full filling the roles vacated by FS Vaughn Carraway and SS Justin Gildea. Leading the pack will be junior Chris Hutton and senior Abdul Smith. Hutton played in all 11 games last year with two starts. He finished with 19 tackles and an interception.  Smith played in eight games with two starts.

Competing for action will be junior Brian Burns, sophomore Michael Felton, redshirt freshman Stephaun Marshall, freshman Jihaad Pretlow, redshirt freshman Dion Shaw, and redshirt freshman Nate L. Smith.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Matt Rhule will look to replace four-year placekicker and punter Brandon McManus.

New to Owls this spring is transfer Paul Layton, who earned his degree from Albany and will complete his eligibility at Temple this fall. The two-time first-team All-Northeast Conference honoree averaged 41.0 yards per punt in career.

Also competing at placekicker are sophomore Tyler Mayes and redshirt freshman Colby Perry.
