3.24.13 | Men's Tennis
BRONX, N.Y. – After dropping nine-straight decisions, the Temple men's tennis team finally got back on the winning side with a 4-3 win over Atlantic 10 rival Fordham on Sunday, March 24.
In doubles action, it was all Fordham with the host team winning at flights one and two to claim the point.
The Owls quickly got that back and took a 2-1 lead with wins at number six and number three. Sam Rundle picked up a 6-0, 6-4 win at the sixth flight before Nicolas Paulus made it 2-1 with a 7-5, 6-2 decision at No. 3.
The Rams again jumped on top with wins at one and two, but the rest went to Temple with victories at five and four, respectively. With the team trailing 3-2, Hicham Belkssir picked up a 6-4, 6-0 decision at No. 5 to tie the match. It came down to Santiago Canete at the fourth flight, and the freshman came from behind to earn a three-set 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision and clinch the win for TU.
“The guys played really well today,” said head coach Steve Mauro. “They have been improving each week and working hard in practice and today it was evident. I think this win can give us momentum for the rest of the season.”
The Owls are 3-9 and host Morgan State on Sunday, March 31, in an 11:30 a.m. match held at Fossler's Cheltenham Tennis in Elkins Park, Pa.
