No. 9 Fencing Sends Maximum Qualifiers To NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional On Saturday

3.8.13 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA— The No. 9 Temple women's fencing squad heads for the meet it has been training for all season on Saturday, when it opens competition at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional. Fencing will get underway at 8:30 a.m. on the campus of Lafayette College.

Coming into this meet, the Owls, who are ranked No. 9 in the nation with a regular season record of 22-8, had a problem all programs would like to have. After claiming their 17th straight NIWFA Championship title last Saturday at Swarthmore, all 15 fencers on the roster qualified to compete in this weekend's NCAA Regional. However, the rules permit only 12 fencers per school are able to compete in the meet, so representing Temple in each weapon division will be Epiphany Georges, Fatima Largaespada, Mikayla Varadi and Demi Antipas in foil. Taking the strips in epee will be Jill Bratton, Kim Howell, Chantal Montrose and Jessica Hall. The Owls will be represented in sabre by Tiki Kastor, Petra Khan, Lauren Rangel-Friedman and Tasia Ford.

A year ago, the Owls had four member s qualify for the NCAA Championships. Included in that quartet was Jill Bratton and Mikayla Varadi. While those two look to make their return, Temple's other 10 fencers will be looking to qualify for the nation's grand stage down in San Antonio, Texas March 2-23.

Last week in their NIWFA Championship meet, not only did Temple win the overall team title, but defended the team titles in Foil, Epee and Sabre. Juniors Epiphany Georges and Chantal Montrose went undefeated in their bouts and claimed third consecutive individual NIWFA titles; Georges winning foil and Montrose taking epee.

Earlier this week, College Fencing 360 released its final national poll of the season, which had Temple ranked No. 9, where it has consistently been all season. The Owls will get the opportunity to go up against some of the best fencers in the nation when it competes at Lafayette.
