Temple Travels to Delaware Tuesday For Liberty Bell Classic Semifinal

Newark, Del. – Temple, now 10-13 overall and 2-4 in the Atlantic 10, returns to action on Tuesday to play in the semifinal of the Liberty Bell Classic against Delaware.  The Owls are coming off a series loss to George Washington over the weekend. 

Temple beat Lehigh last week in Ambler, Pa., 9-3 behind cleanup hitter Derek Peterson and redshirt junior Daniel Dragos standout performances to reach the semifinal game.

Starting on the mound for the Owls will be sophomore Adam Dian.  The native Gibsonia, Pa. started his last game against Lehigh in the quarterfinal matchup.  Dian pitched the first three innings of the game as he held the Mountain Hawks scoreless before being relieved by Tim McCarthy who picked up his first win of the season.  Dian owns a record of 0-0 with a 3.68 ERA in five games this season.

Junior Henry Knabe leads the team with a .378 batting average (31-for-82) and is second on the team in hits with 31.  Sophomore Nick Lustrino had reached base safely in 20 consecutive games before going hitless in the first game of the weekend series against George Washington.  Lustrino leads the team in hits with 33 and is third on the team with a .344 batting average. 

Junior Derek Peterson leads the Owls in homeruns, runs batted in, and runs scored.  Peterson has totaled 21 RBIs this year on 33 hits which ranks him first on the team after batting 5-for-12 this past weekend. 

Delaware beat Saint Joseph's 17-3 in the quarterfinals to advance to play against Temple.  Delaware holds a record of 18-8 this season as they have been dominant at home recording 12 wins in 16 games. 

The Blue Hens are led by a strong offense which has nine players batting over .320.  First baseman Jimmy Yezzo leads the team in batting with a .459 batting average that ranks him in the top overall in the NCAA.  Sophomore Yezzo has recorded 50 hits this season along with four homeruns, 17 doubles, and 37 RBIs that leads Delaware in each category.

Junior Nick Ferdinand has an explosive bat from the plate recording four homeruns and a .389 batting average this season. 
The Blue Hens are sending out sophomore Dan Gatto to start the game on the mound.  Gatto has posted a 5.14 ERA in seven appearances and two starts.  He is 1-1 on the year pitching 21.0 innings and striking out 17 batters.

Delaware's strongest starting pitcher is Chad Kuhl who has a 2.79 ERA this season with a stellar record of 5-1 in seven starts.  The sophomore has thrown one complete game in his 51.2 innings of work recording 38 strikeouts and only allowing 16 earned runs.

The Blue Hens' bullpen is strong as well with two relief pitchers recording ERAs lower than 2.50.  Matt Soren has a team low 2.02 ERA and a record of 1-1 while Stephen Richter is 4-0 with a 2.45 ERA and two saves out of the pen. 

The Owls and Blue Hens played each other once this season on opening day in Cary, N.C. seeing Delaware take the game 8-4 behind Chris Kuhl's six strong innings of work on the mound earning his first win of the season. 

Temple looks to rebound against Delaware to earn a spot in the Liberty Bell Classic Final at Citizens Bank Park on April 16.  The winner of the game will face either Villanova or Penn in the championship game.
