PHILADELPHIA— Sophomore RHP Eric Peterson continues to collect awards for his no-hit bid last Saturday against La Salle. After already being named Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Big 5 Pitcher of the Week, Peterson has now been recognized nationally, as he is this week's College Baseball Insider.com Louisville Slugger National Pitcher of the Week.
Peterson carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning of Saturday's game against city-rival La Salle before letting up a leadoff double to Joey Ravert.
The righty was three outs away from becoming the first Temple pitcher in 31 years to throw a no-hitter and only the fifth in program history. It was also the second time this season that Peterson carried a no-hitter through at least the first five innings.
Peterson's stellar performance was his second straight complete game and his first career complete game shutout. The sophomore faced the minimum of batters through 7.1 innings, as he only faced a total of 29 for the game. Peterson recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in his complete game effort and improved to 4-0 on the season and in the process, lowered his ERA to 1.91 on the year.
Before hitting a batter in the top of the sixth inning, Peterson had retired 29 straight batters going back to his previous start (at GW, 3/30). The Bear, Del. native has now recorded 13 straight scoreless innings.
Peterson is the first Temple pitcher to receive this national honor since Tom Dolan in 2007.
