SHREVEPORT, La. – Junior captain Heather Zaniewski will be the only gymnast representing Temple in Sunday's Individual Finals at the USAG National Championships at Centenary College's Gold Dome. In Friday's semifinals, Zaniewski shined on the national stage as she was served a career-high uneven parallel bars score of 9.825, tying her for second place overall and allowing her to advance.
Getting the competition started, sophomore Lauren Capone took to the vault, where placed 16th overall with her score of 9.625.
Competing as an injured reserve for sophomore Stephanie Verry in the floor exercise, senior Margaret Walch made the most of her opportunity by putting up a solid effort that earned her a 9.725 in her final collegiate routine.
Temple's entire balanced beam squad qualified for nationals. Over the course of the two sessions, junior Sylvie Borschel led the Owls with her 9.600 on the apparatus, while sophomore Taylor Rakus was given a 9.575 for her routine.
Senior Jean Alban worked all four events in the second semifinal session to earn an all-around score of 37.625. Her best event in the nightcap came in the floor exercise, where she was tabbed with a 9.650.
Junior Brittanie DeMeno took part in multiple events, as she landed her vault for 9.550 and took a 9.325 for her routine on the beam.
While the season ends for six Temple gymnasts, Zaniewski will wait until Sunday to close out her 2013 campaign, as she will compete for a USAG National title on uneven parallel bars at 1:00 p.m.
