Men's Tennis Comes From Behind to Win Match Over Saint Joseph's, 4-3
4.16.13 | Men's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Trailing 3-0, the Temple men's tennis team mounted an exciting comeback with victories in the final four singles events to take a 4-3 win over visiting Saint Joseph's on Tuesday afternoon at TU Pavilion. The Owls improve to 6-10 overall and the Hawks drop to 10-11.
Today's match was also Senior Day, used to honor the only senior on Temple's squad, Kacper Rams, in a pre-match ceremony. Rams suffered an injury that has cut his season short and did not compete.
SJU took the doubles point with wins at the first and second flights. An 8-5 decision at No. 2, followed by an 8-6 decision at No. 1 wrapped up the 1-0 lead for the visitors.
The Hawks kept things rolling in singles play, winning at both the second and third flights to take the commanding 3-0 lead. Kristian Marquart finally got TU on the board, winning his match at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4, over Alex Veronis. Nicolas Paulus followed with an intense three-set win (4-6, 6-1, 6-0) at the fourth flight to bring his squad within one, 3-2.
After Sam Rundle evened it at 3-3 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jeff Kessler at the sixth flight, it all came down to Hicham Belkssir and Max Mantague at No. 5. Belkssir, a winner in his last four matches, picked up a 7-6(4) win in the first set before dropping a 3-6 decision in the second. The two made the conclusion of the often-heated match between the cross-city rivals an exciting one, going to a tiebreaker in the third set. Belkssir ultimately prevailed, winning the third set 7-6(5) to secure the win for the Owls.
“Today was a great win in two ways,” said head coach Steve Mauro. “We got to honor senior Kacper Rams, who has been an outstanding player for us the past four years. In addition, we picked up a great win that will hopefully give us momentum heading into the Atlantic 10 tournament. The team started a little slow in doubles, but came on strong in singles play and Hicham [Belkssir] pulled out a tough three-set match to clinch the win.”
Temple hosts UMBC in a non-conference match at 12 p.m. on Saturday at TU Pavilion.
