Men's Tennis Drops 5-2 Decision to Visiting UMBC

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple men's tennis team stepped out of conference play to host UMBC on Saturday afternoon at TU Pavilion, dropping a 5-2 match to the visiting Retrievers. TU closes out the regular season with one more non-conference match, hosting Rider for a 2 p.m. match on Monday.
UMBC earned the doubles point with wins at the first and third flights. Kristian Marquart and Sam Rundle were winning 7-3 at No. 2, but the match went unfinished because the point was wrapped up.
The Retrievers quickly secured the win with victories in singles play at No. 3, No. 4 and the second flight, respectively. Hernan Vasconez helped his squad avoid the shutout with a three-set gutsy win at No. 1. The sophomore defeated Justin Carter 7-6(8), 3-6, 7-5.
Freshman Nicolas Paulus was TU's other point winner on the day, defeating Kamal Patel 6-3, 2-6, 10-8, at the fifth flight.
“It was a tough loss today,” commented head coach Steve Mauro. “Singles could have gone either way. I was especially happy with the way Hernan Vasconez played filling in for Kacper Rams at No. 1. He got a big win over UMBC's top player. Overall, it was a good performance that unfortunately didn't turn out the way we had hoped.”
