PHILADELPHIA – Five awards were given out by the Temple volleyball team at its annual banquet, held this year at Edberg Olson Hall on Friday, April 19. Senior Chelsea Tupuola, the Atlantic 10 Libero of the Year, was named Team MVP.

The Most Improved Player Award went to junior Elyse Burkert, while the Spirit Award was given to senior Caitlin McMillen. For her performance in the classroom, freshman Alyssa Drachslin was given the Outstanding Academic Award.

The team also honored another valuable contributor, giving strength and conditioning coach Miroslaw Babiarz the Best Support Staff Award.

Tupuola, named to the A-10 Second Team in addition to her Libero of the Year honors, finished her Temple career with 1,429 digs to rank seventh all-time in program history. In her senior season she was named the MVP of both the Temple Invitational and Big 5 Tournament, and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Miami (OH) Invitational. Her 579 digs for the season ranked second all-time in a single season at Temple, and she was first in the Atlantic 10 and 33rd among all NCAA Division I players with 5.31 digs per set.

Burkert started in all 30 matches this past season, and was second on the team with 426 kills (3.91 per set). She also tied for second in digs with 334 (3.06 per set). McMillen struggled with injuries throughout her career as an Owl, but when she was not on the court she was always one of the team's most vocal supporters from the bench.  Drachslin, winner of the academic award, is an undeclared major in the College of Liberal Arts, but achieved a perfect 4.0 grade-point-average in her first semester at Temple.

Tupuola and Gabriella Matautia were also given their Atlantic 10 awards at the banquet. Tupula got her A-10 Second Team and Libero of the Year Awards, while Matautia was given her A-10 First Team Award.

Matautia was also named to the A-10 All-Championship Team. With 437 kills (4.05 kills per set, second in the A-10), she was instrumental in leading Temple to its best season in years. She led the team and all players in the conference with 41 service aces (0.38 aces per set), and ranked second on the team with 3.09 digs per set (334 total).
