Owls' Softball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep at Saint Louis, Falling 3-2 and 11-3

4.20.13 | Softball

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Temple softball swept in a doubleheader for the first time this season, falling in both games at Saint Louis on Saturday, 3-2 and 11-3. The Owls (19-20, 7-5 Atlantic 10) had either split or won both against opponents in twinbills previously this year.

All of the runs in game one came off of homeruns. The Billikens (19-17, 7-5 A-10) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two-run second inning. The host team got a one-out single, followed by a homerun from Alyson Brand, to put them up early.

Ali Robinson got TU on the board, cutting the lead in half, with a one-out solo shot in the fourth. After SLU increased it to a 3-1 contest with another dinger in the sixth and got two quick outs to open the seventh, Devynne Nelons made it interesting with a solo homer to left field, cutting it to 3-2. But pitcher Brianna Lore (9-12) got a strikeout to end the rally and get the one run victory.

The Owls outhit Saint Louis in the contest, 5-4, with five different players collecting hits. Kelsey Dominik (9-3) pitched well in the hard-luck loss with 6.0 innings of work, allowing just four hits, walking none and striking out three. Lore bested her with the complete-game five hit effort, fanning eight and walking none.

The Billikens bats were out in force from the start of game two, and the team scored seven times on five hits and an error in the opening frame. Temple starter Brooklin White (4-7) did not record an out before giving way to Kylie Kristovich in the first.

SLU added one more in the bottom of the third when Erin Harcar hit a solo homerun, making it an 8-0 game. The Owls finally broke the drought with a three-run fourth to cut the score to 8-3. Stephanie Pasquale led off with a single and one out later, Leah Lucas drew a walk. Nelons stepped in and clubbed her second homer of the day to bring them all around.

It was a shortlived burst, however, as the home team came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to put the team back on top by eight. With back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the fifth, the Owls looked as if they might avoid the mercy run-rule loss, but pitcher Laney Kneib (10-5) induced two ground outs to preserve the early win.

Kneib took the complete-game win with six hits allowed, three earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts. White allowed five hits and seven runs in her brief stint, walking two. Kristovich pitched 3.1 innings of relief, giving up six hits and four runs, and Jessica Mahoney faced two batters in the fourth, getting a fly ball and a ground out.

Pasquale, whose 21-game hit streak was ended in the first game of the day, and Sarah Prezioso were each 2-for-3 in the contest.

TU travels to A-10 newcomer Butler for a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m. (EST).
