VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Temple softball team split a pair of games at non-conference foe Villanova on Tuesday afternoon. The Owls took the opener in come-from-behind fashion, 4-2, before dropping a 3-0 decision in the nightcap.
It was a pitcher's duel in the first game with both pitchers carrying one-hitters into the sixth inning and Villanova leading 2-1. The host team got its two runs in the third inning, scoring on an error and a passed ball to build the 2-0 advantage. The Owls came back in the top of the fourth with a run of their own, using a Leah Lucas RBI double to cut the lead in half.
Temple finally got to Kate Poppe (15-19) in the sixth, starting with Ali Robinson's leadoff double in the frame. One out later, Stephanie Pasquale's misplayed pop up allowed Robinson to tie the game and put a runner on second. Kelsey Dominik stepped in a sent a homerun over the left field fence to drive in two and make it a 4-2 game. That score would hold and the Cherry & White came away with the two-run victory.
Jessica Mahoney (5-10) pitched an impressive game, throwing a one-hitter and retiring the final 13 batters of the contest. The sophomore walked three and struck out two. Poppe took the loss with 6.0 innings pitched, allowing three hits and four runs, walking two and fanning eight.
Game two started similarly to the first one, with neither team able to produce offensively. It was a 0-0 game until the bottom of the fifth when the Wildcats finally got to TU pitcher Kelsey Dominik. After two quick outs, Shea Palmer used a bunt single to start a rally. Amanda Marquez followed with a double to left to plate Palmer, and Ali Lowe responded with another double to drive in Marquez. Lowe would eventually score on a Temple error to make it a 3-0 game.
The Owls threatened in the top of the sixth after Annie Marcopolus led off with a bunt single and, one out later, Pasquale singled up the middle and both runners advanced to put runners on second and third. But Villanova got a double play to end the inning and the threat. Neither team would produce the rest of the way for the 3-0 Villanova win.
Dominik (10-4) tossed a solid game, giving up five hits in 6.0 innings, walking two and striking out one. Kaity Sitzman (1-5) got the complete-game victory, allowing seven hits, walking one and striking out four.
Pasquale went 2-for-3 in the contest for the Owls. Valerie Ortega collected two hits for Villanova for the only multiple-hit performance for her team.
Temple (22-21) heads to Penn for a single game at 4 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. Villanova is 16-26 overall.
