Men's Tennis Earns Sixth Seed For Upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship

4.24.13 | Men's Tennis

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. The Temple men's tennis team has received the sixth seed at the 35th annual Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship, being held on April 25-28 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. The Owls will face #11 Saint Louis at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 25.

Temple is 7-11 on the year with wins over four Atlantic 10 teams, including Fordham, La Salle, Richmond and Saint Joseph's. The Cherry & White have not faced Saint Louis this season, and in fact, have not gone up against the Billikens since the 2009-10 season. That year, TU handed SLU a 4-3 loss in the second round of the A-10 tournament.

Freshman Nicolas Paulus leads the Owls with a 14-10 singles record that includes a 12-6 dual match mark and a 5-2 record against A-10 opponents. The rookie is a perfect 4-0 at the third flight and has won three straight heading in to the championship. Classmate Santiago Canete boasts the next best singles record, going 9-9 overall, including a 5-4 record at the fourth flight.

In doubles action, sophomore Kristian Marquart and freshman Sam Rundle have teamed up to post a 6-4 record, going 3-1 at No. 2 and 3-2 at No. 3. Paulus and Canete also had a winning record as a duo, going 3-1 overall.

Playing for a chance at its first Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis title, the VCU Rams have earned the top seed. In the final week of the season, the Rams battled reigning champion, George Washington, 4-2, to clinch the top seed in this year's A-10 Championship. The Colonials, 2011 and 2012 A-10 Champions, have earned the second seed. Rounding out the 14-team field are Charlotte (third), Xavier (fourth), Duquesne (fifth), Temple (sixth), Richmond (seventh), Saint Joseph's (eighth), Butler (ninth), Fordham (10th), Saint Louis (11th) St. Bonaventure (12th), Dayton (13th) and La Salle (14th).

Competition begins on Thursday, April 25 at 9:00 a.m. with the final match of the day set to start at 3:00 p.m. Top seeds VCU and George Washington earn a bye and will play in Friday's quarterfinals. The first semifinal match is slated for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, while the second semifinal contest is set for 1:00 p.m. The championship match will be played on Sunday, April 28 at 10:00 a.m.

The A-10 Men's Tennis Championship is a single-elimination event. The winner of the Championship will receive the Conference's automatic bid to compete in the NCAA Tournament.
