4.25.13 | Men's Tennis
MASON, Ohio – The sixth-seeded Temple men's tennis team outlasted 11th-seeded Saint Louis in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday, April 25. The Owls defeated the Billikens 4-2 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
TU made quick work of the doubles point, winning at both the first and second flights to take a 1-0 lead. Kristian Marquart and Sam Rundle opened play with an 8-3 win at No. 2 , before Hicham Belkssir and Hernan Vasconez picked up an 8-5 victory at No. 1 to claim the early lead.
Santiago Canete made it 2-0 with his 6-4, 6-4 straight-set win at the third flight to start singles play. But the lower-seeded SLU squad made it a match with two-straight victories at flights five and six, respectively, to tie the match at 2-2. Marquart put the Owls back on top with a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Patrick Kella at No. 2, before Nicolas Paulus pulled out a three-set win, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1, at the fourth flight to secure the win.
“The guys were really looking forward to this tournament and came out strong,” said head coach Steve Mauro. “I was very happy with the way everyone played in doubles, especially our No. 1 team of Hernan (Vasconez) and Hicham (Belkssir). Our one through four singles players performed extremely well. We look forward to the challenge of playing the three-seed Charlotte. It should be a good match and a great opportunity for us.”
Temple is 8-11 and will face #3 Charlotte at 1 p.m. tomorrow in the quarterfinals.
