Temple Set To Compete At 119th Penn Relays
4.24.13 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The Penn Relays | Temple At The Penn Relays
PHILADELPHIA – The highest anticipated track and field meet of the season takes place for hundreds of schools across the nation this weekend On Thursday, Temple will open competition at the 119th Penn Relays down at Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania. The Owls will have representation in 16 events over the course of the three days. Senior Jade Wilson will get it started for Temple on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the 400 meter hurdles.
Opening day at The Penn Relays will also consist of sophomore Margo Britton taking part in the shot put and the discus throw. Last season at this meet, Britton was the runner-up for the shot put title (15.71 meters), as she broke the school record, which was previously held by her. Since her last trip to Penn Relays, Britton has been crowned the Atlantic 10 Conference Outdoor and Indoor Shot Put Champion. In the discus throw, the York, Pa. has demonstrated her strength in that event even more this season. In an event that featured competitors from across the nation, Britton placed second at the Miami Alumni Invitational with a mark of 46.48 meters—the closest she has come to her personal best, which she set at last year's A-10 Outdoor Championships.
The women's distance medley relay team, who has set school record times twice during the indoor season, will have their first chance to compete in the event in the outdoor season Thursday at 5:25 p.m.
In the nightcap on Thursday at 6:20 p.m., Ambrosia Iwugo, Tonney Smith, Tessa West and Michelle Davis Timothy will come together to form the 4x400 meter relay squad. The four combined for their season-best time (3:45.87) at Miami.
Isatta Kenneh, Dia Dorsey, Shanae Bailey and Iwugo will all combine to run the 4x100 heats Thursday at 1:00 p.m..
In other field events on the women's side on the opening day, Kiersten LaRoche will take part in the long jump at 4:00 p.m.
The men's side gets competition underway Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. when Darryl McDuffie competes in the high jump beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Damian Myers, Carlton Stafford, Gabe Pickett and McDuffie will team up to form Temple's 4x100 meter relay squad at 12:35 p.m. before the 4x400 meter relay team (Alan Harding, Lionel Wilson, Stafford and Pickett) takes the track at 4:55 p.m. The men's distance medley squad will run the track at 2:25 on Day Two.
In between those two collective events, freshman Jamal Wilson will compete in the long jump (3:30 p.m., Friday).
Temple's women's side will pick up competition in Day Two when 4x200 heats get underway and Jamiah Janneh competes in the triple jump.
The Owls round out participation in the nation's longest running meet Saturday, as Pickett and Derek Holland will compete in the triple jump and Justin Berg takes part in the hammer throw.
