PHILADELPHIA – On Day 1 of collegiate competition at the 119th Penn Relays, junior Kiersten LaRoche was the standout for the Owls. Over the course of her career, she has demonstrated her athleticism in the jump events, but on Thursday afternoon she showed that she is among the best in the nation, as she won the long jump title on her final attempt with a career-best mark of 5.96 meters. Sophomore Margo Britton, who was the runner-up for the shot put title at The Penn Relays last season as a rookie, matched that ranking in the 2013 competition with her second place mark of 14.81 meters.
Temple had representation in six events in the first day of The Penn Relays. Also coming away with a strong finish was the Owls' distance medley relay team, who took seventh place with a time of 11”47.08. Junior Anna Pavone ran her portion in 3:42.45 before handing off the baton to Tessa West, who rushed for the next 58.91. Senior Tonney Smith took the baton from there for the next 2:11.32 and gave to sophomore Jenna Dubrow, who completed the last 4:59.93 of the medley relay.
The day got started with senior Jade Wilson in the 400 meter hurdles. Wilson finished the fifth section of the race in 1:01.15, which placed her 20th overall.
Temple will continue competition at The Penn Relays on Friday, as it will have representation in seven more events. The Owls will get started at 10:00 a.m. when Darryl McDuffie competes in the high jump. Temple's women's side will get going at 11:00 a.m. when freshman Jamila Janneh takes part in the triple jump.
