NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— On Monday afternoon, the Atlantic 10 Conference and Philadelphia Big 5 announced their weekly baseball awards for the week ending April 7. Temple sophomore right-handed pitcher Eric Peterson has been named the Pitcher of the Week by both organizations, following his most impressive outing of his collegiate career.
Peterson, who was coming off last week's Big 5 honor, carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning of Saturday's game against city-rival La Salle before letting up a leadoff double to Joey Ravert.
The righty was three outs away from becoming the first Temple pitcher in 31 years to throw a no-hitter and only the fifth in program history. It was also the second time this season that Peterson carried a no-hitter through at least the first five innings.
Peterson's stellar performance was his second straight complete game and his first career complete game shutout. The sophomore faced the minimum of batters through 7.1 innings, as he only faced a total of 29 for the game. Peterson recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in his complete game effort and improved to 4-0 on the season and in the process, lowering his ERA to 1.91 on the year.
Before hitting a batter in the top of the sixth inning, Peterson had retired 29 straight batters going back to his previous start (at GW, 3/30). The Bear, Del. native has now recorded 13 straight scoreless innings.
Peterson, who started the season the team's go-to long releiver out of the bullpen has now been recognized by the Philadelphia Big 5 three times this season for his performances on the mound, as he was tabbed its Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 26 and April 2.
