Pasquale Goes 4-for-5 In Softball's 10-8 Victory at George Washington

5.4.13 | Softball

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Stephanie Pasquale went 4-for-5 and the Temple softball squad withstood a seventh inning rally, defeating George Washington 10-8 on Saturday afternoon at GW Softball Field.

The Owls (29-23, 14-6) took a 4-0 lead with one run in the third and three in the fourth. The first Temple run came on an RBI single by Pasquale that scored Ali Robinson. Robinson had walked earlier and stole second during Pasquale's at bat.

Devynne Nelons led off the fourth with a solo homerun, and RBI hits from Sarah Prezioso and Robinson made it 4-0. After Julia Kastner reached by way of error and advanced to second, Prezioso drove her in with a double to the right field fence. Robinson stepped in and singled up the middle to bring Prezioso around.

GW (26-19, 13-5) cut the lead in half with a two-run fourth. Victoria Valos doubled with one out, and Autumn Taylor drove her in with a single up the middle. Chelsea Lenhart produced the second run of the inning with a groundout back up the middle that scored Taylor.

Another three-run frame in the top of the sixth gave TU a 6-2 advantage. With two outs, Robinson and Pasquale got back-to-back singles before Kelsey Dominik stepped in and sent a ball over the leftfield fence for her 14th homerun of the year, tying teammates Pasquale, Prezioso and Robinson for the single-season record.

A Taylor homerun to lead off the bottom of the sixth made it a 6-3 contest, but the Cherry & White added another three critical runs in the top of the seventh. Temple loaded the bases on a single, a walk and an error, and Robinson's groundout to third brought one run in. Pasquale collected her fourth hit of the day, and drove in two, with a lucky hop single to right field that bounced over the first baseman's head.

Those three runs were huge as the Colonials mounted a rally in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five times on five hits and an error. The host team plated four of those runs before Temple could even record an out. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Valos, who delivered a two-run single to right centerfield for the first two runs of the frame. Dominik came on to relieve Jessica Mahoney, who had pitched a solid game to this point. Taylor got another RBI on a fielder's choice and Carlee Gray singled to second to drive in another.

After the Owls finally recorded the first two outs, Julie Orlandi's RBI single through the left side made it a 10-8 game and brought the winning run to the plate. Dominik got a groundout to shortstop to end the game and preserve the win.

Mahoney (8-10) gave up eight hits in 6.0 innings, allowing seven runs, walking three and striking out seven. Meghan Rico (13-9) lasted just 3.0 innings in the start, giving up three hits and two runs, walking four and fanning four. Courtney Martin pitched 4.0 innings of relief, allowing nine hits and eight runs, only four earned, walking two and striking out four.

In addition to Pasquale's 4-for-5 performance with three runs batted in, Robinson, Dominik and Nelons each recorded multiple-hit games. Robinson was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Dominik and Nelons both went 2-for-3. Dominik drove in three and Nelons had one RBI.

Temple concludes the regular-season with a doubleheader at home against Fordham on Sunday afternoon. The Owls are currently tied with the Rams for third place in the conference standings and are vying for a first-round bye in the upcoming league tournament. The class of 2013, consisting of Kayla Cook, Daniele Raneri, Robinson and Sciarrone, will be honored prior to the games.
