Official Release
PHILADELPHIA— Temple senior third baseman Henry Knabe, junior first baseman Derek Peterson and sophomore RHP Eric Peterson have been named to the 2013 All-Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Team, as voted on by the city's head coaches and sports information offices. It was announced on Monday. In addition, sophomore Nick Lustrino was named a member of the Philadelphia Big 5 Academic Team.
Knabe set career numbers in every offensive category during his senior season. The Owls' third baseman led the team in hitting (.345), slugging percentage (.454), hits (60), RBIs (32) and stolen bases (20) through the 44 games he played. The Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week for the week of May 7, hit .571 and slugged .929 with a team-high eight hits and four RBIs during the week of April 29-May 5, which included wins over Villanova (4/30) and Richmond (5/4). In a come-from-behind win at Villanova, Knabe carried Temple back from a four-run deficit with three doubles and three stolen bases in a perfect 3-for-3 afternoon at Villanova (4/30), which included the game-winning double and 100th hit of his Cherry and White career.
Derek Peterson, who played his first season as a member of the Cherry and White after playing junior college ball at Olney Central College (Ill.), he was one of only two Temple players to start all 46 games this past season. The Owls' everyday first baseman turned in a .977 fielding percentage and led the team with 13 doubles and 82 total bases, while being ranked second on the team in hitting (.314) and hits (59). Peterson also tied for the team lead in multi-hit games with 18, including three hits in the win at #24 Virginia Tech and a season-high four hits at Lehigh back on March 20.
Three-time Philadelphia Big 5 Pitcher of the Week, Eric Peterson is one of the four starting pitchers named to the all-city team. On April 6against Big 5 rival La Salle, Peterson took a no-hitter into the ninth inning and went on to finish with a one-hit complete game shutout and a career-high 10 strikeouts, leading him to College Baseball Insider Louisville Slugger National Pitcher of the Week. For the season, the Owls' Saturday starter recorded the lowest ERA (3.03) by a Temple pitcher in the starting rotation since 1999 (Pete Moore, 1.94). Peterson, who opened the season with a 5-0 record before taking a loss in a quality start at Rhode Island, led the staff in wins with a 6-3 record, which was the most wins by a Temple pitcher since 2008 (Matt Mongiardini). The right-hander struck out 69 batters over 74.1 innings of work and held opposing hitters to a .236 batting average, while being ranked third in the A-10 in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (8.36). In his first appearance of the season, Peterson was the pitcher of record in Temple's win at #24 Virginia Tech (2/23).
Lustrino, who carries a 3.56 GPA as a Liberal Arts major earns his spot on the Philadelphia Big 5 Academic Team, after being one of only two Temple players to start all 46 games in 2013. The Owls' everyday shortstop holds the third-highest GPA on the team and was named to 2012 A-10 Fall Commissioner's Honor Roll and to Temple's President's Honor Roll. Lustrino opened the season on a 10-game hitting streak (2/15-3/9) and reached base safely in each of the first 20 games (2/15-3/27). For the season, he drew a team-high 24 walks and hit.282 on the year with 48 hits, including a team-high 3 triples.
Originally formed in 2006 as the Philadelphia Diamond Five before taking on its current moniker in 2007, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball was founded with the goal of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the Philadelphia area. Big 5 Baseball selects a Player and Pitcher of the Week throughout the season, as well as the All-Big 5 Team and awards at the end of the season. Voting for all weekly and postseason honors is conducted among the head coaches and sports information offices of the five Division I baseball programs in the Philadelphia area: La Salle, Penn, Saint Joseph's, Temple, and Villanova.
