PHILADELPHIA – Third-year head coach Bakeer Ganes has announced the 2013 schedule for Temple volleyball, which will mark the Owls' first season in the competitive American Athletic Conference. The non-conference schedule once again includes the Temple Invitational in mid-September which will feature teams from Brown, Hofstra and Delaware State.

"I think we have a very competitive schedule, especially in the American Athletic Conference," said Ganes. "We will be playing some really good teams, and because it's round robin, we'll be playing everybody twice which gives us a great opportunity to compete.

"Our non-conference schedule is as competitive as it was last year, if not more so. Trips to Buffalo, George Mason and Penn as well as our home tournament on the fourth weekend will really prepare us for conference play. We open our American schedule with Cincinnati and Louisville which are probably the top two teams in the league. This schedule will be very competitive and very challenging, but also very exciting."

Temple begins the season at the University at Buffalo Invite, followed by the Patriot Invitational at George Mason. After a single road match at NJIT on Sept. 11, the Owls return closer to home for the Penn Invitational on Sept. 14-15. Temple's own tournament takes place Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21.

The Owls will face Delaware State on Friday night of their own tournament before taking on Brown and Hofstra on Saturday. Hofstra was a 2012 NCAA Tournament team after defeating Delaware to win the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title.

The opening weekend of play in the American will take Temple on the road to face Cincinnati and powerhouse Louisville. The Cardinals were ranked 17th in the final AVCA Division I Coaches Poll of the 2012 season after going 30-4 and advancing to the NCAA Second Round.

The Owls then play five straight home matches, opening with Memphis on October 4. The schedule also includes a five-game conference road stretch in November before Temple plays its final two regular-season matches at home against USF and UCF late in the month.

The American's regular season champion will earn the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Temple is coming off a 19-11 season in which it ranked as the seventh-most improved team in NCAA Division I after going 8-20 the season before. The Owls were picked to finish 11th of 12 teams in the Atlantic 10 in 2012, but placed fifth with a record of 8-6 to earn the program's first trip to the A-10 Tournament since 2009.
