PHILADELPHIA – Third-year head coach Bakeer Ganes has announced three hires to his Temple volleyball staff for the 2013 season. Graduate assistant coach Sara Scheirman joins the program for her first year, along with volunteer assistant coach Kelly Martin and sports psychologist Samantha Diamond.
“I'm really excited to announce the addition of Sara, Kelly and Samantha to our staff,” said Ganes. “Sara is going to be our graduate assistant and primarily she will assist us with travel arrangements, recruiting and video breakdown. Kelly is going to be helping us with day-to-day responsibilities in the gym and the office. Samantha is going to be our sports psychologist and I'm thrilled we found someone this qualified to fill this position. I believe it's a very important aspect of our student-athletes' experience.
“These additions will help us to provide a much better service to our student-athletes and greatly improve their overall welfare.”
Scheirman is a recent graduate of Duquesne University and a three-time All-Atlantic 10 honoree as an outside hitter for the Dukes' volleyball team. She will be working toward her master's degree in sports management while at Temple, and earned her bachelor's degree in business administration from Duquesne in May, 2013. She served as team captain in her senior year and also served for two seasons as the team's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative. Among her off-the-court honors were selection to attend the 2012 NCAA Career in Sports Forum and mention to the dean's list, Director of Athletics' Honor Roll and Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Since January of 2013, Scheirman has been coaching 14-year olds with the Renaissance Volleyball Club in Pittsburgh. She also served as a coach for the TSEVB Camp in California, Pa., in July of 2013.
Martin is a first-year graduate student in the sports business master's program at Temple. She earned her bachelor's degree in nutrition and dietetics at West Chester University earlier this year, and was a four-year starter for the volleyball team as a middle hitter. Martin, who served as team captain in her senior year, holds the all-time career blocks record at West Chester. She recently had coaching experience as an assistant coach for the U16 club team TCA Philly from 2012-13.
Diamond graduated from Temple in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and is currently completing her master's degree in exercise science and sport psychology at Ithaca College. She spent the past six months working at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., as a mental conditioning coach, serving over 1,000 student-athletes and campers. Diamond, a native of Wilmington, Del., has experience working with athletes from a number of sports including tennis, lacrosse, volleyball and golf.
