American Athletic Conference Announces 2013-14 Women’s Basketball Schedule

PROVIDENCE, R.I.
– The American Athletic Conference announced its 2013-14 women's basketball schedule on Wednesday.
 
Entering its inaugural season of league play, Temple will play 18 conference games, playing each of the nine opponents home and away. The Owls host Memphis on Feb. 9 at 1:30 p.m. at the Liacouras Center in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.
 
"We are so excited to play in the American Athletic Conference and to usher in this new era of women's basketball," Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza said.  "Obviously, this is the most challenging schedule in the history of the program. We are excited to bring outstanding competition to Philadelphia, and we can't wait to take the court. Our fans will see some great games."
 
Temple opens the season at cross-town rival La Salle (Nov. 8) in Philadelphia Big 5 action. 
 
Overall, Temple will play 12 of 29 games against NCAA Tournament teams from last season, including defending national champion Connecticut and national runner-up Louisville.
                                                                                                     
The Owls will play their home games in McGonigle Hall and the Liacouras Center. Exact sites will be announced later.
 
The 2014 Women's Basketball Championship will be held Friday, March 7 through Monday, March 10 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.  All 10 league teams will participate in the championship, with seeding based on regular-season finishes. The top four seeds will receive byes to the quarterfinal round. The tournament winner will earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. The semifinals will be televised on ESPNU, while the championship will be on ESPN or ESPN2.
 
The Conference's women's basketball tournament has been one of the nation's strongest and most successful. Previously held in Hartford, Conn., the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship was the nation's attendance leader for nine straight years. The tournament produced 23 NCAA Final Four appearances, including Louisville and Connecticut in 2013, and nine national champions, including the Huskies' title last season. The winner will receive the Conference's automatic berth into the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
