PHILADELPHIA - The Temple University men's and women's cross country teams competed against their city rivals Friday evening in the Friend Philadelphia Big 5 Invitational on Belmont Plateau . The meet, which did not involve team scoring, was hosted by the Owls to recognize the life of Roswell Friend, who passed away in the summer of 2011 as he was about to enter his senior season at Temple.
The most important thing about this event was honoring Roswell," said James Snyder, Temple assistant coach for distance/cross country. "We had Mrs. Friend out here as well as the whole team out, apart from just the distance kids, so it was great to have everyone out her to honor who he was and what he did for our program."
The top finisher on the men's side was sophomore Alex Izewski, who placed 53rd in a time of 20:10.91. Senior Will Keller was not far behind, in 57th place (20:19.37) while sophomore William Maltin (20:41.04) and sophomore Owen Glatts (20:46.63) placed 62nd and 65th, respectively.
On the women's side, junior Jenna Dubrow was the Owls' top finisher, placing 24th in a time of 15:06.50. Sophomore Janie Augustyn was next for TU, coming in 40th with a time of 15:57.16. Freshmen Rachel Flynn (16:30.27) and Gwen Porter (16:30.27) were less than a second apart, placing 45th and 46th while freshman Danielle Britton (16:55.47) came in 49th place.
The Owls next compete at the Paul Short Invitational on Saturday, October 5.
