FARMINGDALE, NY - Brandon Matthews, one of the hottest amateur golfers in the country, is off to a strong start to his sophomore season, carding a five-under 135 over 36 holes at The Doc Gimmler (formerly The McLaughlin) Saturday to help lead the Owls to a tie for fifth at the 14-team event. The two-day tournament, hosted by St. John's and held at Bethpage CC Red Course, concludes with 18 holes Sunday.
Matthews, who won three tournaments in his freshman season, shot a four-under 66 in the morning roud and then added a one-under 69 in the afternoon session. He is four shots back of Yale's Joe Willis, who shot a 63 and 68 for a nine-under 131.
Senior Matthew Crescenzo was tied for 10th with a one-under 139 while junior Matt Teesdale posted a three-over 143 (73-70) to tie for 31st, Junior Mike Amole was in 55th place (75-72, 147) while junior Alec Kissel (74-08, 154) rounded out the field for Temple.
Yale sits atop the leaderboard with a 546. The Bulldogs are followed by Harvard (554), Marquette (558), Florida Southern (559), Temple (563), Army (563), Columbia (565), IUPUI (572), Seton Hall (573), Princeton (574), St. Thomas Aquinas (576), St. John's (578), Johnson & Wales (581), Navy (586),
