FARMINGDALE, NY -
Sophomore Brandon Matthews tied for third overall among the 76 competitors to help lead Temple to a tie for fifth place at The Doc Gimmler (formerly The McLaughlin) Sunday.

Yale won the two-day tournament, hosted by St. John's and held at Bethpage CC Red Couse, with a 20-under par 820. Temple was just three strokes behind second place Harvard (836) with a one-under 839.

"I am encouraged and happy with how we played at our first event," said Temple head coach Brian Quinn. "I am looking forward to seeing how we play on a real good golf course the next two days."

Matthews, who carded an even-par 70 on Sunday's final round, finished with a five-under 210. Senior Matthew Crescenzo was one-over Sunday (71), and placed tie for 14th with an even-par 210.

The biggest story Sunday for the Owls was the play of Mike Amole. The junior had a career-best round with a five-under 65, the lowest round by any golfer on the final day.

"Obviously Mike played really well,' said Quinn. "It was definitely a great round for him and for our program."

Amole finished tied for 25th overall (212) one shot better than fellow junior Matt Teesdale, who shot an even par 70 for a three-day total of 213 ((tie-31st). Junior Alec Kissel (74-80-75, 229/71st) rounded out the field for Temple.

Yale's Joe Willis (63-68-68) was the overall medalist, finishing with an 11-under 199

Temple has no rest as the Owls traveled to Newport, RI to compete in the Adams Cup held at the Newport National Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday.
