Volleyball's Gabriella Matautia Named Most Valuable Opposite at the Penn Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - From her performance in three matches for Temple volleyball over this past weekend, senior right side hitter Gabriella Matautia was named the Most Valuable Opposite at the Penn Invitational. The Owls went 2-1 for the weekend to improve their overall record to 7-2, which is the best start for the program since 2001.
In Temple's final match of the tournament against Penn, Matautia surpassed the 1,000-kill plateau for her career, and now has 1,012 career kills.
Matautia averaged 3.42 kills per set and 2.42 digs per set during the tournament, recording a double-double of 15 kills and 12 digs against Penn and coming close to double-doubles in the other two matches. She put down 14 kills with a hitting percentage of .414 in a 3-1 win vs. La Salle, while also recording eight digs. In a 3-1 win vs. Weber State, she tallied 12 kills, nine digs and three service aces.
With 3.76 kills per set so far this season, Matautia leads all players in the American Athletic Conference.
Temple will play at home for the first time this season when the Owls host their annual Temple Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20-21. The round-robin action will also feature teams from Hofstra, Delaware State and Brown.
